Can anyone give me some pointers

Post by sollyboy »

Hi Pugs
Just a few question that have been bothering me with the old 406 hdi 90, first it done nearly 14000, the engine sound a bit clanky , just had a full service and the pulley replaced , due to get the belt replaced in few weeks. have two neighbours with same cars, a lot lower milage sound a lot smoother than mine. Mechanic reckons that it the mileage, get some engine treatment to see if that makes a difference, then I can point the finger at the top end of the engine if it makes it quieter, does sound as if it from the top end of the engines, tappets ?

Next had a fuel leak from the fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail, had a new one put on £135 ouch, still leaking .The stealer told my mechanic to tighten it up well an hard , tried that , still leaking. £350 for a new fuel rail . Any one know where I could get one ( anyone breaking an hdi 90 engine)

Had the battery off the car for maybe 30 hours , Radio works but trouble tuning in to stations , but would this have something to do with the stereo code and the battery off the car for 30 hours?

Just got some wind deflector from Octimex they sale them only for the saloon model , but the two front pair will fit an estate. look a treat , easy to wack on , on E bay , paid about £30 +

The engines can sound rattly on HDis with big miles, but the noise is usually down to the injectors rather than actual wear in the motor itself. Treat it to an engine flush and an oil change (GTD magnatec suits the HDi well) and if the sound remains then it probably is the injectors, so not to worry. Use OE pug oil filters only!

I'd be incilned not to gor for a 2nd hand fuel rail - the pressures generated in the fuel system are phenomenal and a leak can easily sever a finger or cause a malfuntion of sufficient magnitude to punch a hole in a piston top, so i'd pay for a new 'un and sit back and enjoy the reliability.

Check the settings on the stereo - mine has local/DX settings and you tabe between the 2 by scrolling repeatedly through the band, though i've got to say FM reception & lock has never been outstanding on mine.

Welcome to the forum!

Now what's this you say about a wind deflector? What does it do, where does it go?

They are those things you stick on the frame of the door above the window to stop the wind blowing in I think

Ah. Was hoping it'd be something funky like a little spoiler that clips on the bonnet and lets the windscreen wipers work at motorway speeds... Maybe I should invent one...

I can vouch for the pressures, when we were reading the ECU on a live test last week the fuel pressure at tickover was 298 Bar (4321 PSi) and when I revved the engine to 3000 RPM it read 450 Bar (6525 PSI) so, things need to be correct when it comes to the joints in the system.

I would look more closely at the pressure switch and it's seal (crush washer?) I doubt the rail will be at fault.

As for the radio, join the club! everyones radio is playing up at the moment it seems, someone on here will be able to help I'm sure.

Welcome by the way :D

You'd think they'd work... but they don't above 30ish. The up-stroke is fine but the down-stroke jumps all over the place. Fairly new set too, from the dealer since the last non-pug pair I tried (the expensive ones from Halfrauds) ended up in lane 3 of the M6 after they fell off!!! Why do 406s have such non-standard wiper blade fittings? :(

Hmm I've just had a bad thought...

Hmm I have the spoiler on my drivers side wiper and that is absolutely fine. The passenger side doesn't though, so it's tends to "jump" on the way up.. and down!

I think mine may be down to the stiffness of the wiper arms, I haven't WD40'd them in a while. Since I needed to change the blades last in fact as you can pull the arms up but they wouldn't go back down without persuasion :)

Sorry Sollyboy, I think I've hijacked this thread slightly... *backs away quietly*
