All V6-powered D8s had the ES9J4 engine, outputting 194 HP. Early D9s (1999 - 2000) also had this engine. It was then replaced with the ES9J4S engine, which was tuned by Porsche and included such niceties as variable valve timing, and output was boosted to 210 HP.

The ES9J4S engine is certainly capable of producing more power than that - a derivative of that engine was used in the Renaultsport Clio V6, which had the rear seats removed and their version of that engine mid-mounted and tuned to produce 230 HP.

@Highlander, you are very much correct. One big advantage ES9J4S engine has over ES9J4 engine apart from improved power and toque is. THE COIL PACKS: The ES9J4S V6 has 6 individual
coil packs, while the ES9J4 V6 has single coil
pack. None of them have distributor. The advantage
the 6 individual coil packs in ES9J4S V6 has over ES9J4 ES9J4S.single coil pack is that if one or two coil packs
suddenly fails, you can still drive the car home on 5 or 4 spark plugs, pending when you replace the 1 or 2
failed coils or even all the 6. But if the single coil pack
in ES9J4 dies, the car will stop & wont start again until
you get a new coil pack & replace the dead one.

Just check the manufacturer of the ignition coils - the ES9J4S originally shipped with SAGEM coils; these were found to have insufficient damp proofing and were prone to corrosion and failure. So where you're right that the ES9J4 had a single coil pack (and therefore a single point of failure), the coil pack was much less likely to fail than any of the 6 individual coils. Therefore, if you find an ES9J4S, make sure to replace the SAGEM coils (if it has them) with Delphi ones. These have white tops on them, and have a much better record for reliability.

Disclaimer: I've never owned a V6, but these are the sort of interesting things you read about when on the 406oc and 406 Coupe Club forums every day!

if the coil the only thing thats bugging you buy a spare!!

i would prefer the d8 v6 as the wireing is easier as its not multiplex.
