First dibs on my w-reg 406 estate 110

Post by EDWARD757 »

Hi All,
I am selling my 406 estate 110 as I now have a new car. I am currently away on a trip but will post the car on ebay on my return. I thought I would give people on the forum first dibs. What follows is the description I have put together for ebay so apologies for the bits you will be familiar with but I am open to reasonable offers, she just needs a new owner. I will post photos on ebay in due course...

The bad bits:
In the time I have owned the car there has been little laquer towards the rear of the car extending up to the front doors. Although unsightly up close it does not appear to have affected the body as there is no evidence of any rust. The whole body has plenty of what could be called character.
All four tyres will need to be replaced shortly but I notice ebay has alloy wheels with tyres for not too much.
There is only one key and that can only be used to manually lock the car at the door as the rubber button is now missing.
The interior is in reasonable condition but has some small holes in the rear seats.
There is an occasional fault in the ABS system. It does not come on every time and has not occurred during the MOT but it is a suspected rusty induction ring on the driveshaft.
The outside temperature reading has never worked – this is generally a probe failure which could be replaced and lives in the nearside mirror housing.

The best bits:
The space in the car is massive. The boot swallows everything you could throw at it and the roof rails are also available for long items.
The air conditioning works and pumps out cold air which transforms how the car is to drive in hot weather and also the wet weather.
This car is very economic. She gets a dose of Redex fuel treatment about every fifth tank and that is perhaps why she returns such good economy. The best I have got was last summer on a run from the south coast to Oxford and back – I got 74.4mpg (I have checked the computer and it is accurate to about 1%). Generally I get 61mpg or it drops to 58mpg is the AC is regularly used. These figures are achieved by very gentle driving, anticipation, never going above 60mph and changing up before the turbo spools up at around 1800-1900rpm. To ensure the EGR and turbo health I do a run a month at higher speeds so everything gets exercised and used. On a high speed motorway cruise, one could expect 52-55mpg whilst not attracting too much attention. RPM is also kept low for the last couple of miles so the turbo can spool down with oil circulating.
With this economy the tank will cover 1200miles and never does less than 1000miles.
She has armrests attached to the front seats and will cover mega distance with ease.
I have checked the front pads and there is plenty of life left in them. An oil service is due in about 2000miles and could be considered within a deal. The recommended service interval is 12,000m on the HDI engine (6,000m on the XUD fore-runner engine) but I found she got a little noisy if run past 10,000m so I tend to change the oil then. I use top brand oil (striking whenever halfrauds have the deals on) and good filters to keep the mechanicals in great shape.
Overall the car is easy and pleasant to drive with an excellent AC system. The oil, PAS and coolant have all been recently changed and the brake components are all young. She only falls down cosmetically. In the words of the profanosaurus, the car is like Sally Gunnell…not much to look at but a very good runner.
The reason for sale is I have been given a newer car and so my 406 can move on. Please do not let the mileage put you off. These cars regularly do 600,000m as taxis, parts are plentiful, rust is rare and many appreciate the car given the drop in reliability with the arrival of the 407.
Since the new car arrived she is no longer in use so just needs a new home. She has MOT until 3rd October 2013 and is taxed until the end of October. She would ideally suit someone either after a short term car or a longer term prospect. She has been regularly serviced and should this continue, will go on for years.
She is advertised elsewhere, I would welcome viewing before bidding and would be happy to deliver the car anywhere domestically as long as my costs are covered.
Happy bidding.
