id like an estate but won't be fussy either way. I'd love an auto if I can find one but they go for silly money on eBay. dont mind spec but really want working air con as it's going to be used 50 miles each way in some slow traffic

Ebay is the only true representation of the real value of cars, but that is what they actually sell for, nothing like the prices some are asking, most 406s are well overpriced on ebay and as a result don't sell.
After looking ant a number of Hdi estates for £600-800 most of which were rubbish I eventually got a very nice one from a garage for £400, it was a trade in and sold as scrap which is what they have to do to stop people bringing them back and complaining, but they taxed it for me and allowed me to use their phone to arrange the insurance.
It had 11 months MOT, a relatively new cam belt and had just been serviced, it also had half a tank of diesel.
I can understand your desire for an auto if you are driving in traffic a lot but personally I wouldn't have one, apart from the extra fuel they use if the auto box fails it will write the car off.

Try Gumtree as I got a nice Executive before Christmas, low mileage, basically one owner and reasonable price.
Re: wanted 406 diesel in vgc
The tax is dearer on the Hdi 90 also the fuel consumption is not as good, on the plus side they are a simpler engine.
