Putting the replacement knob on is much easier than taking the old one off.

And don't think that, just because the new one was easy to put on, that it'll be easy to take off a few months later when you come to do another job, because the new knob will be just as difficult to remove as the original one that'd been on there for 10 years.

You have to lift the ring, then pull left and push forward to engage reverse gear?

In that case, you will struggle to get a suitable replacement gearknob; most after-market ones cater for the normal type of gearbox only.

My saloon had a normal gearbox, the Coupe has the lift-reverse that I think your car has. Must be something about the gearbox.

Instructions are simple really - turn it anti-clockwise about an 8th of a turn, then pull up as hard as you can.

The pulling is the difficult part because it is REALLY stiff, but I still managed to change mine for the silver topped one in less than 10mins. Once it comes off, getting the new one on is easy.

I've still got the original in the shed, but the silver topped ones can be bought on Ebay new for £20 or used for just over £10 - the fella I got mine from sells quite a few now & again.

I didn't click to the fact that you've got a different gearknob - my car has reverse below 5th & the guy I bought the silver one from only seems to have those & the originals like mine.

I reckon the best bet would be to ask Coupe Ade as he's probably got a few of them.

Just had a look on Ebay & they're all the same as mine.

FarmerPug, the knob you want is off've a Coupe with lift-selected reverse gear.

They don't seem to have any after-market ones on eBay, or any original ones either, for that matter - all they have is the normal type.

Ade is probably your best bet, though I know he didn't reply to you when you last tried to contact him. I didn't get a reply either when I tried. Maybe try again? Also, Woody (on this forum) runs French Connection Spares on eBay; maybe he can lay his hands on one for you?

Not sure about petrols, but 2002-on 110 & 136 HDi's have the lift-up reverse, (ML5)? gearbox - I think the same is true for 2.2 & 3.0 petrols.

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
