I think it's not just a filter, it's all the pipes and stuff too. So you have a cone filter roughly where the existing filter box lives, then I guess the red bit goes from the filter to the intake gubbins. Hmm, not sure where the maf goes though...

Plus - eliminates the 406's propensity to drown.
Minus - sucks in hot gas from under the bonnet.

Yeah I think it's some kind of filter on it's own without the air box, I've seen some cone-shaped ones and I've seen some mushroom shaped one's too.

They sometimes come with a bracket to help support it from the existing airbox fixing points (I think) and (I think) the silicone hose connects back to the MAF but I can't be too sure.

If you have a look in your engine bay next time try to imagine what one of these would look like fitted in there, it might be a nice addition and I think they also give a whooshy turbo'ey noise.

do these induction kits even work, because a good test is to see the effect taking the whole air filter assemblies and generally this makes no difference, what will the induction kit do

ave had an induction kit in all my cars and yes they do work and improve the car due to more air getting sooked in if u take the whole assembly off then theres a good chance ull damage the car due to sookin in dust, grit etc......
