For Sale - 406 Estate 1.9 LX TD £300

Green colour, 1988, 1.9 LX TD.
Has working air con and CD player. 84,000 miles on the clock. Taxed until Feb 2011. Price £300. Located in South East London

We have owned this car since it was a year old and it has been a great workhorse. I had the cam belt changed at 40,000 miles and the glow plugs were changed about a year ago. It starts very easily and cruises well on the motorway

We would happily keep this car as it is a good drive and very reliable except…. My wife was driving it a few weeks ago and smoke started coming out of the steering wheel – and she doesn’t drive that fast either! I’ve not been able to replicate this fault but I can’t risk it. My suspicion – and rather uninformed guess – is that the insulation is breaking down in some of the wiring but it needs an expert to look at it.

I’m selling it on this forum as, rather sadly, we have become quite attached to this car and would like it to go to an owner who is going to use it rather than scrap it. I'm hoping this forum will have someone with the expertise to check the wiring to make sure its safe and will also appreciate a lovely motor.

I know it’s not worth much and the price reflects the four good tyres and the remaining tax.

Other faults of which I am aware:
the power button on the CD / Radio has come off
I’ve had to disconnect the flap that controls air recirculation as it kept clicking.

Sounds like it needs a new indicator stalk. Did you ever get a very fast and random ticking noise?

No, the usual thing to burn out round there is the ignition switch...

Apart from the year, which I assume is '1998' not 88 could you confirm the mileage is 84,000 ? thats running in mileage on that engine !

Yes, confirmation that the year is '1998' - doh! And the mileage is 84,000. I've got some assorted old MOT certs if you need some verification. It really is a lovely motor which is why, rather pathetically, I want it to go to a good home.
I'd love to keep it but I can't risk having the wife driving a car that has a possible electrical fault. I'll post some pics on the weekend if it assists.
