How many miles has it done?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I'm all for naming and shaming, at the very least they couldn't find the fault and decided to rip him off for something else.
Gary has a point, I doubt if it'll reach anything like what it's worth (prices on ebay seldom reach cost of mint car - cost of repairs) and, as it is, it's a known quantity - anything else he buys won't be and might need just as much repairing (especially if it also comes from ebay). The end result might end up as severely out of pocket and with much worse car. Unless there's something he's not telling us...
To the OP - 2.2 HDis are much more common in coupés, there's a chap on the 406 coupé club (http://www.peugeot406coupe.com) that specialises in breaking them. He's also on ebay - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ade1122-406-coupe-parts (although I think he's cheaper through the club)

Hi all,
yes there is a case for me keeping the car, but unlike yourselves i now have great dislike for 2.2 406 diesels. my other car is a volkswagen passat which i think is great & have just got another one with tax, mot & a £50 fault from a mate who's had it for the last 5 years. I personally would not go through the hassle of changing the turbo for a second hand one, so in my mind the cost of a new turbo outweights what i will spend on a second passat. hope you understand my tormented mind.

Can certainly see your point. Sometimes you just get to a point where you decide that you've spent enough & are just sick of the sight of the damn thing - even if it means you lose a packet. Hope the Passat serves you better, but don't totally write off the 2.2 HDis - you may find later on that you're drawn back to something similar.chevy27 wrote:Hi all,

My first experience of the 2.2 HDi came in a Citroen C5 5 years ago. I bought it for what seemed like a bargain price, then later found out about the particle filter, eolys fluid & that it was a dealer only job to fix. Was a shame because I liked everything else about it, just knew I couldn't afford to be using the main dealer to sort the particle filter out. 5 years on & people have got more creative & a 2.2 HDi can now be bought cheap, the particle filter removed & in some cases remapped up to 180bhp. You never know what could be around the corner not just in new car design, but in regular people's ingenuity...

Dual mass flywheels and turbos fail - its not a quetion of if it is when it will fail. Its a fact of life. They are stressed mechcanical components. Modern diesels have dual mass flywheels, no escaping it. Also, converting a car to single mass flywheel can cause premature wear and failure to the bottom end - defies of the object really.
In essence, everything that goes wrong on a 406 HDi can pack up on a Passat diesel. - They are not better engineered either. Specially when water gets into your wiring loom which is a very common problem on ALL VAG-Passat platform cars be they VW/Audi/Seat and Skoda based.

Re: Peugeot 406 2.2HDI executive estate on e bay
i hear what your saying, yes i am sure i will have problems on every car i ever own but if you spent £500 on a clutch/flywheel replacement that was not needed while still needing a new turbo i am not sure you would want to keep the vehicle around to constantly remind you of your mistake. yes its an emotional decision as much as a logical one, like i said before it has more to do with my head than the car.
