go to the dealers and buy a new one.

The fuel system on the hdi is very sensitive to dirt and its really not worth the hassle risk of fitting a second hand one. the filter housing (with filter) is about £50 for the 2.0 hdi.

Hi thanks for info.
Got my car in Sept and had problems with the anti pollution (not covered by warranty) in and out garage got new fap fitted and when collected my car there was a smell of diesel inside, next morning there was diesel on drive, only drove a mile home, car had been in garage 12 days and no leak before that, garage deny all responsibitity and refused to speak to me so complained to head office and it is my word against theirs. Next nearest garage is 135 miles away I would rather order from them and pay postage than go to my local dealer, dreading the bill for the work already done
Can you tell me where on the car they would conect to the diagonostic machine please.

Hiya mate, Welcome to the forum 8)

The fuel filter housings on the HDi's are notoriously difficult to open with the result that they usually end up getting damaged when you try to change the element, so most owners just buy a whole new housing with the filter fitted straight away. When one of the lads on here took his 2.2 HDi in for a service the mechanic even refused to try to change the element, broken too many in the past!

The diagnostic connector is behind a blanking panel to the right of the steering column, just above the fuse box cover. (EDIT: just realised you haven't said where you're from....the diagnostic connector is there assuming its a right hand drive car, I assume if it's LHD then the connector is to the left of the steering column.)
