If youre looking for the tool that goes into the flywheel via the access hole on the bottom of the bell housing, a length of angle iron will lock the flywheel on the starter ring teeth.

Alternatively sticking the car in top gear will lock it up solid.

I've been looking into this as I'm due to change the cambelt, waterpump, crank pulley, and aux belt very soon.

what kinda size angle iron are we talking? and could it damage the teeth?

I'm gonna be using an impact wrench on the pulley bolt (cus they are fixed so tight) and could do without the engine moving

I've seen on ebay the tool is only £11 posted

If its just to get the pulley off have a look at jaspers comments on how to get this bolt undone (6th post) in viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7299 this post. Thats the way I'll be doing it.

If you go down the angle Iron route then its a "tool tip" in the haines manual, so not sure of the exact size pop the cover off, and have a spy. Those teeth are hardened, so if it comes to a battle between the starter motor, and the starter ring, the motor will always loose.

The car in gear is also recommended by haines.

I'm all for getting the right tool for the job, but if theres a simple solution, like 2 8mm bolts or drills to lock the engine for the timing belt then I'd rather have a bash that way.

After a closer look....

What engine have you got? and gearbox?

Just noticed the angle iron's only mentioned on the HDi engine when timing the engine, but all suggest sticking the car in 4th/top gear (manual boxes only), then having someone apply the brakes while you undo the crank bolt, the crank will be locked solid while the brakes are on.

The locking tools needed only needed for Auto boxes, where you remove the starter motor, and use the tool you're looking for on the starter ring.
