1.8 d8 running temp
Can anyone tell me what the temp gauge should read on a 1998 1.8 d8 406 is ?.Since i got the car it has been showing 70 on the gauge in normal running,it now shows 90 in normal running and the electric fan kicks in at 100 and it goes down to 95 when idling then returns to 90 when driving again can anyone tell me what the normal position is as a reference point. Thanks

Re: 1.8 d8 running temp
My '99 1.8 D9 runs at about 80 to 90 C, and never goes higher than 90, even on really hot days (yes, we have them here in Aberdeen sometimes), and even if I'm a bit heavy on the loud pedal (well, heavier than usual anyway
)
Not sure if the cooling system is better on the D9 lump than on the D8.
Just my personal experience.

Re: 1.8 d8 running temp
My traktor runs at 80 when I'm under way and there's air over the rad. At a standstill on a hot summer day it gets up to 95 but no higher. AFAIK my fans have never kicked in, even after I proved they work ^_^

Re: 1.8 d8 running temp
funny this post shud appear actually as i wasnt convinced mine was running correctly . mine would run at 70 then 5 min of stop start traffic and its 90 and beyond had it up to 100 which to my thinking aint right so removed stat it didnt get warm when running but the same prob in stop start traffic up it went again . got a new stat so monday morning was spent flushing the system fit stat bled it all new coolant and now it runs at 80. creeps up to 90 in traffic but takes longer and kinda settles at 90 now
i am fairly sure i had an airlock before coz i undid the bleed screw at the bulk head months ago and water trickled out which i thought was ok but having done it again on monday i gave the pipe running from the stat housing to the rad a squeeze ( with the guage at 90/stat open )and had coolant shooting 2 inches out like it had shifted air out
hope this helps

My d8 2.1 12v diesel would run at 70, all the time, no matter how hot or cold it was outside.

Around 80-85c. Don't think you've got a problem but give the coolant a bleed for good measure; it's a 5 minute jobgordonw wrote:Can anyone tell me what the temp gauge should read on a 1998 1.8 d8 406 is ?.Since i got the car it has been showing 70 on the gauge in normal running,it now shows 90 in normal running and the electric fan kicks in at 100 and it goes down to 95 when idling then returns to 90 when driving again can anyone tell me what the normal position is as a reference point. Thanks

Re: 1.8 d8 running temp
There are two; one on the heater matrix (bulk head) and one on the thermostat housing.gordonw wrote:Is the bleed screw near the bulkhead .
Park with the front o/s wheel on a kerb to get the filler above the height of the bleed screws; start with the 'stat screw and then the matrix.

Re: 1.8 d8 running temp
mine hasn't got the bleed on the stat housing only at the bulk head. i think the 2 litre tubby has a different set up.teamster1975 wrote:There are two; one on the heater matrix (bulk head) and one on the thermostat housing.gordonw wrote:Is the bleed screw near the bulkhead .
