Starting problem

Post by hursty »

Hi all,

My pug turns over for about 10 seconds before starting. when it does start it seems to chuff out all the diesel it pumped in for that duration. Now i have put in a new set of heater plugs which actually made it worse. If i heat the plugs twice prior to starting then it starts okay and straight away. So is it a coil that heats the plugs?

Hi Teamster,

It's a 1.9 TD 1998 estate model. Not had it long so still learning about it. and picking up the bits that fell off!

Any ideas about the starting problem?

Regards

A coil? There'll be a relay, somewhere near the battery. Check the glowplugs get the full 12 volts when they're lit.

Check the glow plug timer unit, may be located in the well at the back of the engine compartment at the passengers side.
Check for corroded or loose connections.
Fix a test lamp to the earth and to any of the glow plug connections and turn on the ignition, the lamp should light up for 8 to 10 seconds then go out.
One other thing, have you fitted good quality glow plugs?
