X reg peugeot 406 2.0 Hdi drivebelt snapped.

Post by mickeydread1122 »

the drivebelt of my Pug snapped this morning and luckly for me it didn't do any damage to the timing belt and i was able to drive it home at 10mph as i was only 1 mile away.i went to buy a replacement drivebelt at our local parts dealer and tried to fit it back but i am having problems with the alternator pulley which keeps on jumping/ coming out of position.
can someone shed a light on me as to what i need to do with regards to the alternator pulley.do i have to buy a replacement pulley and what other parts do i need as well or do i have to buy the complete alternator. i need to get this done asap as i need to use the car.
thanking you in advance for your advice.

Sounds like the clutch has gone in the alternator pulley, you can get new pulleys, but cost it out against a new alternator, these pulleys can break off and cause lots of damage, I have seen these pulleys come off on some cars and go right through the bonnet.

You won't have power steering or aircon and the battery will not be charged, but as the water pump is driven by the timing belt you won't overheat.

all sorted now, bought a new clutch pulley at GSF car parts for £36 and though it was a pain in the neck to take the alternator out a guy at a company that specialises with alternators was able to put the new clutch pulley for me for free which was a bit handy .bought also a brand new drive belt and tensioners and i fixed it myself and there is no more squeaking noise.
thanks JASPER for your advice mate.

When mine went the replacement alternator (XL brand I think) came with a solid pulley.
It has caused no problems whatsoever in 20k miles over 6 months.
