Just purchased a 406!!
Hi all, Just bought another real tidy 406 a white 01 90bhp hdi (pics to follow)
Never had a hdi before my previous 1.9 had the pump and turbo modded for some extra bhp. Would like some info on tunning these engines, it has 75,000 careful miles so should be up for abit of tunning.
Has anyone done a 5stud conversion?
Is there anywhere on here that shows tastefull modded 406's or is there another website showing cool 406's
Cheers

Re: Just purchased a 406!!
Welcome along!
Never had a diesel myself, but I'm told that on the HDi 90, the best way to get a bit more out of it is to get the engine remapped.
More enterprising souls on the forum have fitted an intercooler from an HDi 110, which has also given them a boost, but requires more mechanical know-how.
A good performance exhaust pipe (Powerflow or Longlife) can help too. Not sure if de-catting is an option on the HDi if you want to keep it road-legal; I don't know what it does to emissions, but it should give a little more grunt, I think.
My own favourite value-for-money job is fitting a strut brace - you can pick them up for £30-ish, and by god do they help. The front end of the car seems a lot less sloppy during cornering, even at lower speeds. It's cheaper than getting lowering springs, too, and a strut brace is very easy to fit (I did it myself, and that's saying something).
5-stud conversions? Not that I know of, but then, I've never looked.
I haven't done much in the way of modding on my 1.8 petrol - certainly no body kits - but here's what I have done:
- Genuine Peugeot 406 boot lid spoiler - gives the car a nice sporty look, and it's easy to fit
- 15in alloys from a Peugeot 307
- Black leather door cards from an exec-trim car
- Black leather gearstick gaiter (after-market product on eBay)
- Powerflow cat-back stainless-steel exhaust
- Strut brace (from a 406 Coupe, modified to fit the saloon) over the front suspension
I only did the Powerflow thing myself because the original exhaust was leaky - that said, it's something I would now recommend doing because it's a noticeable effect on a low-power car like mine, and the exhaust note is definitely nicer).

Welcome to the forum, own an hdi 90 myself, great car. Look through the owners gallery on here, a few guys have done some nice mods to their cars. Plenty of info about tunning different specs on here too.snakie wrote:Hi all, Just bought another real tidy 406 a white 01 90bhp hdi (pics to follow)

Re: Just purchased a 406!!
Hello and welcome. Got the same engine as yours in the missus 306 estate and it does the job quite well. Remap and 110 intercooler are the way to go for more power, and shouldn't cost you all that much. 5 stud conversions are not often carried out on the 406, however you can get 4 to 5 stud hub adapters from tinterweb. Modding the 406 is easy enough if you want to keep it simple. Most of the bodykits available out there are too big and obvious IMO. Here's a pic of how mine looks more or less atm, got a genuine Pug spoiler at a mates house getting sprayed up soon, so get that whacked on and I'm after some subtle sideskirts and then I need to customise/smooth the rear bumper and that's the outside more or less finished. Still can't decide whether to fit the debadged bumper and grill I've got too.
Lots of spec, check out the progress/build here

Re: Just purchased a 406!!
Found out before any money was passed that the 406 had been clocked, an that car was an ex taxi pretty disappointed cause the car was pretty mint in everyway but didnt want til take a chance on it
But not til be lot down found a white 97 2.1td glx that had been laying around for 3yrs put a new battery in it 1st turn of the key it fired no probs, a little chokey to begin with but a spin down the road i was suprised by the low down torque of this engine. (but would like some more)
Apply for a mot this week, so hopefully be fully road legal soon.
Many peeps on here own a 2.1td what mods have you carried out on it

Clocked???
tut tut!
Good news on the 2.1 though, that engine is semi-electronically controlled so can be remapped
A common fault with that engine is the injector needle lift? sensor - I might have said that wrong but there's one or two on here that'll know more.......
