Wanted interior door handles

Post by plod »

Been on the lookout for some chrome door handles to no avail

Believe the price at the stealers has gone up, as was around £24.50 plus vat, but appears to be over £29 now

Mate knows someone in the parts dept at the stealer and said can get me them for £20 plus vat, but too rich for me

Anyone breaking a 406 and have the standard black interior door handles - don't want the whole mechanism, just the pull handles

Going to get the paint shop round the corner who did my dash parts to try and paint them to match these

Not being tight but cheap as poss, as bit of a gamble as the handles are a different type of plastic to the dash parts making them more difficult to paint so might not turn out

Preferably all 4 so can get painted at the same time, but if not just a pair of fronts or rears
Can then get one set painted, fit them, and the ones I take off can then be sent to be painted

Door card off ! Me neither

If wanting the whole section it requires the door card to come off, as it has 3 rivets securing it to the door

However, i'm sure i've seen a guide, maybe over on the coupe forum, where it's possible to take the surround off and get access the the pin that holds just the handle into it, thus negating the requirement to take the door card off.
I may have even saved it into favourites on my laptop at home - leaving work now, so will look when I get home as post up the guide on how to do it if I can find it :D

No guide over on coupe club, just some instructions

Hope the post originator won't mind, but copied pic location and info along with it.
I used the guide in this thread which involved drilling out the rivets holding in the whole door handle mechanism. I did this with the driver's side and fixed it back using pop rivets. However, after doing this I realised that it was actually possible to replace the handle without drilling the old rivets out. I'll try and explain although I didn't take any photos.

The handle is held in place with a pin which extends into the plastic surround. You can see where at the bottom of the handle shown in this picture.

Image

It is possible to prize the bottom of the handle out using a screwdriver which reveals this pin. All that needs doing is to pull this pin to remove the handle. The rod that goes to the door release still needs to be removed but this is a fairly simple procedure. I was actually very annoyed that I didn't know this before drilling out the old rivets.

The only tricky thing is getting it back together again. The pin can be pushed up through a hole in the bottom of the plastic surroung. However the spring is almost impossible to relocate in the correct position unless you know how. The other guide does not explain this. There is a hole on the door handle which is obviously there so that the spring can temporarily be held back. Once the door handle is in place, it's just a case of push the spring out of the hole and it will find its correct location.

I hope this may help anyone else doing this job. I will try and add some more pictures to explain the spring thing easier and will add this to the "how to" guide to assist anyone else.

To show how much easier this is, it took me a good hour or so to drill out the old rivets and replace on the driver's side. The other method must have taken me about 10 minutes! :D
Like I say, hopefully the post originator won't mind me nicking the info from the coupeclub

them chrome door handles are a real nightmare to get hold of, the only place i can see them is at my local breakers in an se car, but the thing is if i can get the full handles and their surrounds out of that car isnt it just bolts holding the handles in, where are the rivets, and if i drill them out is it possible to get the back ends of the rivets out of the doors to stop rattles

In the pic above, the person has bolted the replacements he acquired, so the answer is, the rivets are where you see the bolts in the pic

is that what these rivets are all about, that would barely take 10 seconds to drill them out, however if it was me drilling them out i do suppose i would also have to add the 1hour to get the drill charged, 10 mins to get all the tools ready to take the door cards off, about 25mins to get the door cards off. But i dont mind all that the thing i have to ask is, how hard is it to get the back end of the old rivets once they fall away, do they fall into some hidden part of the door which is inacessable and then i would have to live with a new rattle, or is there enough space to get one of them telescopic magnets in to take it out. Putting in the new rivets though shouldnt be hard with the scisor riveter i have. Last question, how does the door handle pull open the door, is it by cables, or by them bars that look like bent coathangers, and is it hard to get this bit out once the rivets are out, is there even any pics?

the rivets will fall in the door but you can get your hand in to get the bits out
yes the metal rods open the door

Then it will be an enjoyable day when the handles arrive, plenty to do, ill have to take all the door cards off without breaking anything and then the rivets, thanks for the help, because without it id end up going to the scrapyard with the wrong tools to get the handles from the donor car. Im making sure now to know how to get all the SE kit out of this scrap car, so i dont spend all day at a breakers yard, Thanks.
