Is this another com2000 problem? or something else?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Is this another com2000 problem? or something else?

Post by StevePPP »

Hi folks

Recently picked up a '52 plate 406 HDi 110 Estate thats pretty mint inside and out, full history and only 70k on it. I've had PSA cars before, but this is my first 406.

However, I've discovered a few faults with the car which seems the be the case nowadays with buying 2nd hand cars - nobody seems to want to sell on a 100% working car

Current problems are:

- Horn doesn't work (on any of the 4 pads, tried pushing it all over the place). Fuse ok. Strange that it passed an MOT as part of the sale....
- Indicators don't cancel left or right. Done some reading and don't have the problem where it over-cancels to the opposite direction - i just need to manually cancel them. I'm quite happy to live with this but thought it worth a mention.
- The high-beam flash doesn't work. Hence i can't flash people. However, at night I can lock full-beam on and that works - so i can kind of quickly turn full-beam on/off to flash people, but obviously i can't do this during the day and the normal dipped headlights need to be on for the full beam to work.

I want to fix the full-beam flashing and the horn (as at the moment i have no way or expressing my annoyance at other drivers! ), and want to know if its all signs of a broken com2000, or whether these other two faults might be something different. From what i've read, com2000 problems mainly seem to be indicator related - and like i said, i'm not too fussed about having to cancel indicators manually if it means i don't have to replace the com2000!

Thanks :)

sounds com2000, the original com2000 in my car had indicator issues, the second one i got was second hand and the flash didnt work nor did the window squirter. But the 3rd one i got was brand new and had no problems, as for the horn the wee copper contacts at the back could be corroded, but if you were replacing the com2000 you would also have to take the horn pad out so it could be looked at when its getting fixed. As for expressing annoyance to other drivers hand gestures work well especially out of the window so the driver can see it clearly

well i had a spare afternoon today so i thought i'd make sure the horn itself wasn't duff - blimey thats in an awkward location :?

took the grill off first, the discovered it behind the fog light, so arch liner out, then found it easier to remove the washer bottle for access as well, which required the headlamp out to get to an awkward bolt  anyway, put 12v across the horn and it works fine.

so i guess its time to pull the steering wheel apart :(

Hopefully it's just a matter of cleaning up the contacts.

I'm wondering if the previous owner's frigged up the indicators to stop them over-cancelling from right and going left. The main beam flash is inside the unit :? There's not a mass of foam wedged in it is there?
