where to find and remove the EGR Valve 1.9 td

Post by hasin »

hey people, i just need to know where to locate the EGR valve on my 406, its a 1.9 L TD 1997.
when i first got the car it had quite quick pick up and over the years the performance has started to go, the turbo is fine because when you put your foot down a little bit you can hear the nice whistle that it makes. my brother has a 2.0 tdci mondeo and he removed the egr valve to give it a clean and it was filthy and full of carbon, he said once he cleand it and put it back on the pick up went a lot better. so if anyone can just tell me where to locate the egr valve and how to remove it i would be very thankful and also if you can just show a pic or something it would make things much more clear. thanks to the people who reply back!

No.1 is the egr valve. I believe the favourite way to disable it is to disconnect and plug the vacuum pipe, (8), between the solenoid valve, (6) and the egr.

It's probably worth taking it off / cleaning it / making sure it seals properly / re-fitting.

Not sure about the 'benefits' of disabling it, (if this is what you were thinking), as it only operates when you're not touching the accelerator and it helps the engine warm up quicker.

The EGR is found in the Exhaust manifold chap,

but you can just disconnect the plug from the solenoid, look behind the battery in the engine bay and you will see a green connector, unplug it and leave it, then the EGR will stay closed all the time

hey thans folks for the reply, i was just going to give it a clean out but i was reading on other forums and other peoples comments and they said they have blocked the egr valve using a 10pence coin, im not sure how that works but does it harm your engine in anyway? thanks

Just unplug the electrics and the valve won't open any more. (unless it's broken and leaking constantly)

What does the egr do to you engine? I've ready stuff about faster warm ups and emissions and such, but basically the egr pumps soot and crap into your engine.

And for comparison, here is an inlet tract WITHOUT an egr system.

Guess which one i refitted to my car ...

I could easily be wrong, but I think the last of the 1.9TD's have enough electronic tomfoolery to detect the open-circuit egr if you just unplug it - that's why I suggested removing / plugging the vacuum pipe.

that is some dirty stuff but i had a go to take off the egr valve but i got so confused because there are way to many things to disconnect and remove, so i just put it back together and gave up! like i said before when i first got the car it had good pick up but now is seems to lack and up hills is has no power and the engine starts to get hot and the temp needle goes up! not sure if its the egr valve which is blocked and stopping it from getting power..

hasin, you could try cleaning/refurbing your injectors. I changed one of mine recently due to it leaking and did notice a slight increase in torque up the hill I live on. Would imagine if I'd fitted 4 nicely refurbed ones it would have given her a lot more go, alternatively get some fuel additive for 5 or 6 quid as a test first.

It is worth noting that pour spray from the injectors will probably effect emissions as well so you might want to check your last MoT and see if you were near the limit.

My plan is to salvage a set from a scrapper and send them off for refurb, just waiting for a spare £100 or so and to get the other jobs which are more urgent first :cheesy:
