Intermittent non start when warm - 1998 406 1.9 Tdi

Post by Biggie3030 »

Hi, My first post so please advise if this has been dealt with before.
The situation is we have a 1998 406 1.9 Tdi with 130K on the clock and she has been a diamond, up until now! Just over 12 months ago occasionally the missus would experience a non start after say driving and parking up for an hour or two. The car will crank over fine but will not fire. Now as odd as it seems removing the key from the ignition and waiting a couple of minutes will sometimes cure the problem! Never a problem from cold at all only when parked up after being driven.
Now although no longer in the trade I still have my apprenticeship papers and spanners so I have investigated as far as I can see but as with all intermittent faults it helps if it is suffering from the fault when trying to diagnose. I have checked feeds into the fuel cut off and advance solenoid (I believe according to the Haynes manual these are one and the same). These seem to be correct, I have also noticed that the connector for this, the load lever switch and a sensor at the bottom of the inj pump are all mounted together on the front of the pump. Now again can't be sure but sometimes it seems by moving these wires she will fire into life!
So any suggestions could it be a sticking fuel cut off solenoid? This is shielded I believe by a security plate with shear off head bolts and looks a right b'stard to remove. The Bosch man did tell me it was a pump out job if I suspected this, is it really?

Any help really appreciated, thanks in advance

As far as I am aware there is no coded/magic key on this vehicle. It is not fitted with a immobiliser key pad and I have 2 keys. 1 remote locking type key which the remote function has never really worked and anothe standard type key. Any other ideas?

Check the battery and glow plugs if it has them.

If it has no keypad then it will have a transponder key -
If i remember rightly, transponder aerials were allways a pain on these (located round the ign barell)
Try changing it as its dead easy and only ?15 frommpeugeot.
