Bottom pulley (Aux belt)

Hi guys, i have been looking into that rattling noise from my engine (2.2HDI) and i think i have sourced the problem.

when i took the floor tray off i noticed a few metal filings, on closer inspection, i noticed it was coming from the bottom aux pulley (the biggest one). I took two some photos so you an see what i mean.






It looks like there is someting wrong, as the lugs are rubbing in the slots of the pulley, one side there is a huge gap, the otherside there is no gap. Also, when i lever against the pulley, there is a fair bit of play in it. (im not sure what it is suppose to look like, and dont know anyone else with a 406 to compare it with)
What do you guys think is the problem? bottom pulley worn/gone?
I have been planning to do the timing belt soon, so i might aswell do it all as once.

Is it just the pulley that needs replacing? Any idea how much these cost....ill have to take a trip down peugeot i think!!
Has anyone got the part catalogue (with exploded diagram) for this?

It's up to you but it's 39.50 from GSF (part no. 023PC0012) or 107 quid from Pug

I'm not sure if there's any issues with it, other than the pulley, and getting the bolt undone sounds like a pain in the bum, but hopefully you should get some response from someone who's akchewally done it

Usual response is new belt and water pump whilst at it

It was an item on my 2.0 I didn't want to be doing again, and wanted piece of mind so went with the pug part
For reference, my 2.0l one was £86, as I bartered with them to get better discount

Thanks for you replies guys. The belt isnt looking too clever either! The car has just hit 81,000 and havent had a timing belt change either. Looks like this is going to cost...
So its new
Timing belt kit.
cranks shaft pulley.
New Aux belt.
New water pump (might aswell whilst im there).

These are pretty important parts, and im not sure if i want to get them from GSF. are Peugeot prices are going to bite me?

You need to do a bit of research because quite often the parts that come in a bag with "Peugeot/Citroen" written on them are exactly the same part, made by the same manufacturer, that you get from a factor's, just 3 times the price

The original crank pulley on my previous HDi 90 lasted 140,000 - the pattern replacement, about 30,000. Decided not to do that again.

Aux belt tensioner & idler should at least be checked, (mine failed & threw the aux belt off). No other harm was done, but they've been known to catch in the cambelt sometimes.

2.2's also have a timing chain driving the other camshaft. Opinions vary, but some say this should be changed at the same time as the cambelt.

I'd go for a genuine one from the dealer if you're keeping the car and a new aux belt.

The cambelt is 96K or 5 years.

Your pulley is the modified 3-slot one which isn't supposed to fail

Speed is of the essence here because if it fly's off and the belt decides to wrap itself up the wrong way it'll mash through the cam cover and take the cambelt with it.

When these pulley's go it all starts with a metallic 'ticking' noise from cold and ends with a horrible smacking metallic sound which rises and falls along with the engine revs.

I changed the pulley last night, relatively easy job, but for those that do it, be very careful with the top tensioner bold, it has a left handed thread on it i nearly snapped it

I didnt go with a genuine part as they were £109, and they would have taken 3 days to come, i needed to use the car for work so went with a factors one at £42. Im not botherd if it lasts 30k, as it doesnt take long to replace it.

I did notice that it was "one piece" compared to the original modified one, It looks so much stronger. Whats the difference with the modified ones compared to the "one piece" cheapy ones?

Not much - it just won't snap the crankshaft. - That's almost certainly scare mongerring, but I did read it somewhere...

These dual mass pulleys & flywheels are designed to absorb the shock loads generated as the engine accelerates / deccelerates. The forces get bigger the slower the assembly turns, ergo the 'worst case' is stopping or starting the engine.
