Welcome in Craig! :)
I've got the same car; the engine is fairly bullet proof but you should look out for:

Leaks in the coolant system; radiator, bottom hose, thermostat o-ring perished
Leaky head gasket
Cam belt history
Slipping clutch; the tubby's have generally been thrashed and it will probably be slipping :(

And as is the case for all 406's:

ARB bushes
ARB drop links
Rear top stabiliser rods
Handbrake

There are loads more things to look for but that's the case with any car! :)
1996 406 1.8LX Got a bad case of hydro lock!
1996 406 Executive 2.0 Turbo XU10J2TE No longer hangin' on in there :(
1997 Honda CB500V
2003 Volvo V40 1.8 GDi SE killed by a nutter in a beemer 5 series
2008 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium X

Pro: You own one
Con: It's not a V6

If you fancy a nice upgrade, head over to the electricals forum and have a look at the huge thread in there about retro-fitting trip computer functionality
