Electrcial Gremlins

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Electrcial Gremlins

Post by jjl »

Hi - I have a odd one so hoping someone can help. When I went to start the car yesterday evening both main bulbs blew. But it has also taken out the central locking and the fuel gauge is now stuck in position even though I have put diesel in. The interior light only works when the ignition is in the on position and the service mileage has reset itself and the gauges act up when starting the car. I have cleaned 2 earth points in the engine bay and unplugged all the connectors I can find including the ones on the fuel tank. Lights both work fine with new bulbs in. Any ideas before I commit the untimate crime and take it to a garage. Many Thanks Jeb

Welcome in Jeb! :)
The only other place that causes trouble is the ignition switch and if your car is a D9 the connectors in the drivers footwell.
What year/engine is your car?

Update - Thanks for the link and everbodys help. I have taken a look at the connectors in the drivers footwell and they seemed ok, there was no wet and no corrosion. I have also removed the bsi unit and reseated all the connectors, but no luck. What is another wierd thing when the ignition is swiched on the central locking locks and unlocks but still does not work off the key fob. Does all this point to the bsi and can someone advise on what kind of money these things are. I just now want to get fixed and get rid, its time to buy another car!!

I have checked all connections and they are fine. I have spoken to a auto electrician and he has suggested that there might be a short in the drivers door or the alternator is spiking out 16V on startup. Failing this it is more than likely to be the bsi unit. I will post again once I have investigated.

Update
The bsi unit has been returned from BBA reman with no fault found. I have gone through all earth connectors I could find. Nothing.
I disconnected the wiring drivers side still no luck.
Anyway the Auto electrian is coming out Friday.
I will update if he finds the fault.

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting issue. Turns out that the fuse that feeds the bsi was missing and there was another fuse in the incorrect position.

Sounds like when I put the fuse for the radio memories & MFD backlight back in the wrong position  (I didn't think it mattered because it was meant to be for sat nav which my car doesn't have  ) Glad you got to the bottom of it :cheesy:
