406 One off screeching noise.

Post by miseryguts »

Hi All,

Just thought I'd pop in say hello and hopefully get a bit of advice from you knowledgeable chaps.
Bought a 99 406 diesel saloon from my brother-in-law in September and theres been a few little niggling problems but nothing major.
However, tuesday morning I was driving around town and the car suddenly developed a squeak, which soon turned to a horrendous loud screech scraping & grinding as I'm driving along.
Worried, I came home straight away, reversed up onto the drive, screeching stopped so I drove straight back out again and around our estate....... back to normal and this hasn't been repeated since. Any ideas what this could be?
Please be warned I have very little idea when it comes to mechanics and this is probably evident from my post!!

Thanking you in advance

Hi there, welcome :cheesy:

Did the pitch of the screech change with road or engine speed? Could be you picked up a stone in a brake or perhaps a belt got wet :?

Yeah, probably a stone got caught between the front brake disc and the heat shield, my car does this regular and the noise is shocking

Fan belt slipping?
Does it do it with the engine idling or only when you're moving?

Hiya and thanks for your responses,

Well it was a constant scraping sound, running backwards and forwards, no worse when the brakes were applied. I looked under the car to check that something hadn't fallen off and was dragging along the floor..nothing. Once I reversed up onto the driveway, bumped up onto the kerb, the noise disappeared and hasn't returned.

Must have been some crap caught in the disc or some such then, glad it's sorted at any rate! :)

Just done a VW Golf TDi that got recovered by the AA, the AA said it was a knackered driveshaft....turned out to be a stone between the disc and caliper, 5 minute job.
