windscreen wipers going crazy

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

windscreen wipers going crazy

Post by turflayer »

Hi

I was hoping someone could diagnose my up until now fault free 2002 HDI 90 Rapier.

In between going into and coming out of the supermarket my windscreen wipers seem to develop a mind of there own.

They wont stop wiping and squirting washer fluid, its like they are wiping on automatic. All the speed controls still work I just cant get them to stop.

has any kind soul got a clue what might be wrong?

cheers!

Possibly a faulty COM2000 unit (the steering column/stalk system) which isn't good news; they're expensive to replace unless you can get a guaranteed one from a scrappy :(
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.

well,

Its seems to have stopped doing it now, finger crossed it wont do it again.

I did replace the COM2000 unit a few years ago to fix a broken indicator stalk... managed to get a brand new one and a newer model than my old one for £25 of ebay... but i know they are about £250 from the stealers.

in addition to my car more and more frequently telling me engine coolant temp is too high (the gauges say otherwise and after a year of it doing i think the computer is being precocious!), i dread to think my years of carefree motoring with the 406 are over.

It is still seems to be doing it.... :(

is there any other possible causes before I go out and purchase a new COM200 unit?

thanks

Do you have automatic wipers? If so, there may be a bit of dirt on the sensor under the mirror causing it to go into constant mode? But then it should still switch off when set to "off" position... :|

Yes i do have auto wipers but at the same time the washer jets are on full blast which is very odd. The jets still continue to go even when all the washer fluid has gone. I have full control over the wipers speed.... except off.

searching though the forums could faulty relays cause this problem, or the bcu need resetting? (my car knowledge is poor)

it seems to be pot luck when i go to start the car and its doing it or not.

i think an expensive trip to the dealers in in order.

spoke to them on the phone and it could be anything, though they said it could be a trapped wire in the indicator stalk

will let you know the outcome

Dealer's? :( :( :( It does sound like the stalk on the com2000 as above. You'll probably get charged for a new one (whether it cures the fault or not :frown: ). Not 250 but well over a ton. I'd send you my old one just to try but the postage and tax would be silly.

well just got off the phone with another dealer who was reasonably helpful.

he suggested that its probably a central control issue, and could be damp in the bsi.

I'm going to have a go getting the carpet in the drivers side up to check the wiring, I've a quick look and it seems the carpet is not designed to be removed to easily, has anyone got any pointers?

I know the bsi is located under the drivers dash but does anyone know where specifically so i can check it for damp.

The dealer said he would be surprised if the COM2000 is a fault as it should stop if i move the stalk, plus like i said i swapped it for a new on a few years ago.

If i cant find anything obvious this weekend and its still playing up i'll have to get the credit card out!

I've also tried the bsi reset which hasn't worked.

as mentioned before over the past year i've had the engine coolant temp warning come on (more and more frequently) and the STOP dash light (which does go off) even though my engine gauges are fine and the car is still running smooth....... this might be connected?

I presume RHD will be similar, I found mine when I took of the soft cover above the pedals (much smaller than I expected too)

I was thinking it's the contacts for when you pull the stalk towards you to clear the screen.
