Hi all, I have owned a MK1 1996 2Ltr 16v LX petrol 406 from new. On some occasions when I start the car from cold, the tickover is very erratic ,one second revving at 1200 rpm and then back down to 900 rpm.It rapidly cycles like this until the engine starts to warm up.Once warm If I go to change down ,say approaching traffice lights ,ie clutch down and foot off throttle, the engine revs bomb straight down to zero and stalls. I then lose all steering and braking, which is very unnerving .
I have spoken to the Master Tech at my local Peugeot dealer where i originally bought the car from, and we both suspect that due to my cars high mileage (162,000 miles) I am getting excessive oil vapour being vented into the throttle air inlet ,which we think is contaminating the stepper motor causing it to stick intermittently.
My question is,to stop this happening ,would it be alright if i removed the original oil breather pipe running from the engine top cover to the throttle air inlet and replaced it with a long rubber pipe so that the fumes vent out at ground level. Then block off the opening where the pipe used to go into the air inlet to stop air leaking into the air inlet .
Can i safely disconnect the engine oil breather pipe to cure

i dont know anything about petrol engine cars but it sounds like a problem a friend had on his 2.0 petrol engine and if i can remember correct it was an idle speed controll valve that was his problem,

It's certainly worth cleaning the idle speed control valve, (if you haven't already done so)? Do it a couple of times to see how often it's necessary, if it's only once or twice a year, just do it when you need to.
