My 2001 406 HDI has 117 k, FPSH, last service 2k ago using Mobil 1 oil. Just had new diesel filter housing with filter, new thermostat and air filter. Looked after is an understatement for my car........It gets treated like a baby!
I have been leaving her on idle for 20 mins everyday since this horrible weather. Well I checked the fuel computer and it says 18.2mpg over the past 22 miles My 350bhp Cossie that does 0-60 in 5.1 and a top speed of 162.5mph returns 19mpg! What is going on with my Pug? Whilst on idle I was revving her to 2,500 to warm her up quicker and the fuel computer started to drop whilst I was doing this, it actually read 17.5mpg at one stage!! Is this just the reading of her being on idle and nothing to worry about or something else?
Sounds about right actually.
They drink heavily when cold to try to get up to temperature.
(I was always told to go easy on cold engines.)
At the moment I'm lucky to get 20mpg on the mile to the motorway -- just start and go. Its 30 to 35 in the summer.
So thats why my cars showing the red light at 400miles, thats shite economy but i now appreciate the cold weather is causing it.
But i dont trust the trip computer.
Compared to brim-to-brim filling mine under-reads by 10 to 12 mpg. However, I believe it is more accurate at lower (20s, say) mpgs.
I re-learned to drive keeping one eye on the instantaneous readout and trying to keep it first above 40 and now, after some practice, above 50. (Yes, I drive quite slowly.)
I tried driving slowly, and im aware the throttle has more than one positon but coming out of junctions i floor it, and in this frost my car is idling a lot more.
Some day i may learn to drive economically.
I keep it under 4k revs because thats when peak power comes, and its how i used to drive the petrol clio, i know peak torques about 1750 rpm or thereabouts, but i still like to get more out of it. Still though with all the driving i do the fill lasts a bit more than a month at the moment.
Its huge fun in a front wheel driven car in this weather spinning the front wheels up! You can even get them to spin in 4th I suppose with my driving in this weather it is no surprise I am getting 18mpg!! Although on idle earlier with my foot keeping her at 2,000rpm to warm her up, stereo on and heater on full blast it was resting at 9mpg.....Yep, 9mpg! I took a pic I was that shocked!
