Looking for a estate 406.

Post by adamr8965 »

Hi guys my family car is nearing the end of its life. So im going to replace her with a 406 estate.

Got between £1100 to £1500.

Any ideas on engines because the car will be worked hard, kids on trip's etc dog's in boot general hard work and it's gotta last a 5 years min.

My own car is a 1.9td saloon with 88k runs on veg oil / diesel in really cold weather, Drives like a dream really, athough slowly everywere.

Suggestions would be grateful.
1999 1.9 td lx saloon.

I'd go for an HDi 2.0 110 HP estate, and then get it remapped (about £350 tops) for extra torque and HP. The remap will probably improve your fuel economy too, as long as you don't drive with a lead foot. If you're going to be towing with the car, you can mention that to the remappers and they'll customize the remap to suit the car for those kinds of conditions too.

A 98/99 2.1td with a Bosch pump stuffed on it to run on veg oil. I would anyway.

Id go for the 110 hdi and an ecotune 136 remap, better for refinement, and torque, though you cant get it to run on veg oil

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

bsi probably would need changed and thats fun, suspension may need done. Basically changing engines in newer cars since stupid electrics come along has become a nuisance, my suzuki is very easy to change to a more powerful engine, but doing it on a 406 is probably a 10 spanner rated job in the haynes manual. Though its still tempting to retrofit different engines, is the 2.0 hdi a lighter engine than the old xud? because it would be a great thing to take out a 407 136bhp hdi and put it into a 205.
