Remapping on the naturally-aspirated petrol engines doesn't have quite the dramatic effect that it does on turbocharged diesels. Apparently, you can take the 210 HP V6 engine up to about 232 HP at the most through remapping and combining that with a stainless steel exhaust system.

There was a project car "out there" where someone had added twin turbochargers to the 406 Coupe V6, but I don't recall what the net result was. Twin turbos makes a lot of sense on a V engine, as you have a turbocharger for each bank of cylinders. Unfortunately there's a fair bit of work involved tuning the engine so that it doesn't cause itself a lot of damage with the increased power output. Turbos also have a lot of extra pipework involved.

What has also been suggested as a more suitable form of upgrading a 406 petrol engine is supercharging. Far less pipe work involved, but still some fairly significant work needs to be done to install one. The benefits are that a supercharged setup would weigh less, and you don't get any turbo lag, as the supercharger is constantly boosting your engine's performance. The downside is that you end up using more fuel all the time, rather than just at higher rev ranges.

By having a MASSIVE turbo and a HUGE intercooler, and a very hard-tuned engine designed for performance, not comfortable motorway cruising. Sure it's got huge horsepower, but that turbo takes its time to spool up. I think Jeremy Clarkson lost a straight-line race (rolling start) in one on Top Gear - against a pretty ordinary 2 litre Citroen, I seem to recall.

The Impreza is an ugly beast designed to accelerate hard from a standing start and to grip the road/track/dirt surface without letting go.

The 406 Coupe V6 is designed to be a beautiful, comfortable, yet reasonably exciting and rewarding car for the driver; remember, it's still a 406, so it's still an Executive cruiser. It wasn't marketed as a sports car, it was marketed as an upmarket rep-mobile.

my cousin had an imprezza, sold it for a number of reasons including single figure fuel economy, high insurance, and a awful ride. It didnt look too bad on the outside but the interior had a very destinctive japanese cheapness to it, that the legacy seems to have gone away from.
