If your considering an Alternator change....

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

If your considering an Alternator change....

Post by EDWARD757 »

Do it....
To entertain the kids tday I drove through a deep puddle at speed, on the way to swimming.
On start up I am met with "Battery charging fault" and battery discharge light.
Drive to the shops on the way home and call the fault diagnosis people...the AA.
He arrives very quickly and gives the alternator a clean bill of health as it is intermittently giving charge. It must be the "smart chargingsystem" he declares and I tottle home to think.
I phone John at PCR in Lancing first and they are open until 1430 so pop round there. The alternator is knackered - luckily 1 year and a month after being fitted whilst with the previous owner.
He has not got time to do it but sells me a replacement - £50.
Fitted it in 3 hrs and te only fiddly bit was pushing the tensioner with a 15mm spanner, holding the alternator and with your third hand putting in the bolt.
Easy job though.
His guidance on dropping drivers window and letting her rest before battery disconnect means I have no faults on start.

So a nice bit of diagnosis by Alcoholics Anonymous  At least it's fixed now, and not too pricey.

i never drive through big puddles fast, i always have this fear of water being sucked up into the air intake , that would be a nasty site

i drove my suzuki like mad through big puddles, and it had no snorkel or fancy air filter assembly, just a pipe with a filter, and it never really caused a hydrauliced engine. Just a bit of backfiring.

You were lucky. It all depends on where the air intake is and how much water gets into the engine. A few drops will be fine. a couple of pints will blow it to bits.

the 1.3 started to give a lot of backfiring trouble and i did blame the water, but it turned out to be really bad spark plugs, but the next time its getting a snorkel.
