Shocks, springs, anything to do with the running gear

Odd noise from rear brakes?

Post by Doggy »

Started the car up to come home from work tonight and as I moved off, there was a loud, repetitve clonk from the nsr wheel. Seemed to be once per revolution, so I stopped to check - everything looked OK.

While braking to a stop, there was very pronounced graunching noise - no doubt rusty discs as it was raining datsun cogs this morning. This noise is normal, but the repetitive clonk? Can you get a pad move with the disc, or a handbake shoe jump like this, anybody know?

Sounds like it might pay you to get the wheel off and have a good nosey around at the pads/calipers etc. I don't think it can be to do with the inner shoes as you were using the foot brake when it happened - might be worth tugging on the handbrake lightly to see if you can recreate the noise whilst moving slowly just to check?

I wonder if the handbrake shoe had stuck to the drum in all that rain and it was kinda 'catching' for a while?

Not sure but the big worry would be the lining has separated from a shoe and is on the loose in there :?

Had a similar thing to this on mine sometime ago, especially when
going around right hand bends. Decided time for new pads disc's etc
so bought them dropped them and car off at local garage , when they
finished said the shoes were the reason for the noise as they were
breaking up ....

Thanks guys - to clarify, I wasn't braking at the time, noise happened as I moved off and didn't happen again after first application of the brakes.

It's been OK since too.

I was on the M6 a bit back and got stuck around J10 in the roadworks

I could here something, so got off at 10A M54 and off aj M54 J1

Jacked the car up, and as you say once per revolution, I had a noise
Took wheel off and disc was slightly warped

Maybe it's as simple as that??
