Possible deal on a 7 seater 406 tomoz

Post by Roylewaa »

Hi all,

For the past few weeks ive been looking for a 7 seater 406, I had a 5 seat estate D9 and stupidly sold it when I was in the huff with myself, and my father in law bought a saloon hdi 110 which got me wanting another one aswell as I really miss the comfort and ride quality of the 406

Anyways ive got a chap coming tomorrow that has a V plate D9 petrol 7 seater estate, 150k with short tax and test, to do a possible deal for my Ford Mondeo Zetec V plate, 159k with same amout of short T&T, Ive already told him that obviously the 406 is worth more.

How much realistically should I be looking at giving him cash wise as well as my Mondeo? It runs very well with no faults, recent full clutch kit (on a Mondeo cost a fortune!) little bit of bubbling on the back arches and could do with a new back bumper as its cracked

here it is, Ive got up to £400 cash aswell

Any ideas if he will go for it?

Cheers for any info

Yeah all Mk2 Mondeo bumpers are prone to cracking and smashing, you've just got to breathe on them wrong and they go,
They should come with a roll of gaffer tape in the glove box from the factory

There so prone as the plastic is so thin with nothing behind it, Mine got smashed slightly reversing into a mound of ice at neirly 0mph

The Mondeo valued at £425, the 406 at £650

Does that sound about right? I thought used prices on the 7 seat variant were higher? although is it the milege as its on 150k and its a petrol?

Basically my father in law asked him first as the 406 is on Swapz, for his Focus diesel, but then it turns out the Focus is showing early signs of imminent diesel pump faluire, as its jerking and kangarooing when you pull away, so after I told him the Focus has problems I asked if he fancied doing a deal for my Mundano to which he said he would come and have a look at mine tomorrow, he's a mechanic of 22 years so i'm expecting him pulling the Mondeo to bits.

Like I say ive got upto £400 aswell, would rather not part with the thick end of it tho :(

Well the chap came down this morning with his 406, had a look over the Mondeo, and said he would mull it over and let me know either way

I went over the 406, my only concern was there was a little brown mayo on the dipstick which he passed off as condensation, is this right, he would of drove 4 or so miles to my house?? He also said petrol 406's run a little lumpy when they're cold??

Is their any truth in those statements??

cheers for any info

check the oil cap, if theres mayo kindly pass it, its not even good on sandwiches. Of course ive seen cars with mayo under the cap, both my suzuki jeeps engines had mayoish oil caps, but given the fact they were sitting out of the jeeps they come from with all the inlets exposed i wasnt suprised, so if its been sat up for some time and mayoish then it might not be hg failure, but if its regularly used and has mayo, walk away or else have it checked over by a mechanic, if it passes buy it, if the mechanic says its no good its no good.

I've had mayo on the bottom of the 710 cap but never on the stick. I think if it's got to the stick then it's a more serious problem than just condensation as it's mixed in with the oil.

Condensation could well be right; my 1.8 saloon had the mayo under the oil filler cap when I went to see it. It was November and it was really bloody cold in Lossiemouth that day, and the car had been sitting in the dealers' yard for days unused. No sign of it now.

If you want to go through with it, then go through with it - but I'd take it straight round a local independant garage and ask them to give it a check-over and a mini-service (new plugs, filters, and oil).

My own petrol 406 has always run fine, in the cold, in the warm(-ish - this is Scotland after all), and always starts on the first turn of the key.

What engine is in this 406 - 1.8 or 2.0?

That's what we're saying, under the cap could be condensation, on the dipstick probably isn't.
