Cracking story back there, had me chuckling ref: the Sage-Like Proprietor
Well done Doggy, just think - you can completely ignore the brakes again for at least another 50,000 miles
Arkchewlee I also saw 40,000 miles from the original front pads of the Vulvo which surprised me a tad....mind you I tend to keep off the brakes (as strange as that may sound).

Re: Odd noise from rear brakes?
I have the same rear brakes as those, and I was driving along the other night and all of a sudden, I started getting a clonking sound from the o/s/r wheel. Worried, I got the car home and jacked her up. Not knowing much about cars' brakes, I did notice that one of the pins for the pads was missing, but also the clonking sounded like it was coming from inside the disc. I wasn't actually aware that there were brake shoes inside there? Couls someone please clarify that for me, as I'm getting a pin kit today to fix the pads but worried that the clonking sound has nothing to do with the pads and could cause an accident?

Re: Odd noise from rear brakes?
Now I'm confused...lol
One guy said to me that the 'shoes' could have gone. Another tells me that discs don't have shoes and that it could be the wheel bearing that's gone - but the pic in this thread clearly shows shoes/discs?

Re: Odd noise from rear brakes?
For clarity, the rear discs do two jobs; the foot brake - acting on the brake 'pads' to the disc surface, and the handbrake - acting on a pair of inner shoes inside the hub (hidden).
If you're in any doubt get a reputable garage/mechanic to fit the brake parts.

Yup! I've had the pads out and the disc off and found the shoes lol....Welly wrote:For clarity, the rear discs do two jobs; the foot brake - acting on the brake 'pads' to the disc surface, and the handbrake - acting on a pair of inner shoes inside the hub (hidden).

The source of the clunking sound was the toothed ring that goes over the hub - it had broken into bits! Not only that, one pin was missing from the brake pads and two lug type pins missing from the shoes to keep them in place.

Can the toothed ring be bought singularly?

No it's part of the driveshaftPADDY wrote:Can the toothed ring be bought singularly?

Some guys have had success aralditing it back into place but if yours is in pieces I wouldn't risk it.
Sounds as though someone made a right mess of the brakes before you Paddy!

Re: Odd noise from rear brakes?
Hold on, this is on the rear so it's part of the hub
I thought they were all one bit but obviously not. There's a guy on ebay sells the reluctor rings but changing it will need you have the hub off, which will or will not damage* the bearings in it
* depending who you ask - Haynes says you need a puller which will knacker the bearings but many people on here reckon they've got the hub off without using a puller.

Re: Odd noise from rear brakes?
Ah, I'm sooo glad it's on the rear! Yes, I'll get it done by a garage or my mobile mech. Hopefully, it won't knacker the bearings but it mght just pay to get the bearings just in case - after all, if I don't need 'em, I can take them back...steve_earwig wrote:Hold on, this is on the rear so it's part of the hubI thought they were all one bit but obviously not. As it stands now though, the car's back on the road minus a reductor ring. I don't plan on going out of town so I should be okay until I get one sorted (MOT end of this month)...?

Re: Odd noise from rear brakes?
Unfortunately the bearings aren't available separately, it's all one very expensive lump. They sometimes appear on ebay - you're looking for a 48-tooth hub rahter that a 29.
