Sub £100 hi fi recommendations

Post by plod »

My son will be 12 in 5 weeks

He has asked for a portable cd player and some cd's for then.

Was thinking of buying him a hifi instead to get him more interested in music

Anyone got any good recommendations?
Was planning to spend up to £100 on him, although have a £108 saved on my wish list on Amazon for him

I have a Sony MHC-EC79i. I don't use it much any more to be honest.
It's a bloody good system. Paid £140odd for it about a year ago.
Only reason I don't use it is because I have a 7.1 system for the PC and I just use iTunes.

have you thought of getting him an ipod or another mp3 player? he can still have cds if he wants, as copying them onto the player is easy, or he could use itunes. music is so much cheaper on there. just a thought.

personally i have an ipod touch. its a great bit of kit, easy to use, and does so many things. dont get me wrong, its not the most advanced bit of techn ology, but it allows me to surf the net if i can get wireless connection (off the house routger, or any unlocked network) i can put more music on it than i have cds, and my step son loves it for games. this may be overkill and out of budget, but i think worth considering, especially as they seem to be coming down in price.

get a set of seperates on ebay, something from ebay, and you can enjoy putting the hi fi together and will have a much better understanding of each part. Yes new ones arent cheap but used ones on ebay could be got for under £100 for the whole kit required to make some sound.

personally i dont think they make hifi systems like they used to, heres the sort of thing i would buy, ie something very 80s, very full of buttons, and LCD screens:

old japanese hifis in the 80s were really high tech stuff, my dad had some big hifi system called a 'crown' i used to love pressing all the buttons and making it make the sounds as a child. I remember seeing it about 2 years ago my uncle was using it, and it still all worked. Electronics back in the 80s were built to last, modern stuff now is built to be recycled cheaply and thrown away when the clock forgers the time.

the best hi fi system i seen in the 80s was a Bangaoulfansen . along slim unit with a black glass top that slid back very nice and stylish
and there tvs was very slim in the 80s compared to the Huge Wooden sided things that we and eveyone else had back then,

ithink the Bangaoulfensen was For Snobs back then as you never seen Anyone with one Especialy Council estate brought up people like myself lol,
.
.
Gawd ifeel old now after writing that  does anyone remeber taking back the Glass Barr bottles for the 12p return deposit ?

And you're what, 19?

I remember using the crank handle to start a Moggy. And stuffing it through the bottom of the rad

Btw congratulations on the ambitious spellings guys, it's getting really hard to read in here
