Taking off valve caps

Post by FarmerPug »

Didnt think this would ever be an issue.
I havent lost any strength but im unable to remove the valve caps, they just spin the bit they are sitting in round and round.
By the way they are metal ones, how does one remove such things from the car.

these wee shites are aluoominum, i thought wahey no corrosion but there they are stuck perfectly into place, and if i cant blame corrosion i shall blame wind erosion for this problem.

Had this problem last week....

Lots of WD40 around the cap threads, a small pipe wrench around the base of the valve cap (on the top part of the valve) and unscrew with a pair of pliers on the caps.

Grease them up before refitting so they don't stick.

New valves if they don't come off.

probably a combination of road salt, cold weather and a touch of the bi-metal reaction going on there Farmer, the problem with putting ali ones on a brass valve.

Indeed, I've never bothered with fancy metal valve caps and now I don't think I ever will

Edit: I get my plastic valve caps for free, every time I go in my mate's workshop there's always a load of them lying around the tyre changing machine

and guess what i never had no trouble with my plastic caps, but i wanted the pug logos on the metal ones. Anyhow they will need replaced they look like shite after the spanner slipped a bit, so the old plastic ones will go back. Give a picture of the tool you used thanks.

Sounds like a case of galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and their (ref: spelling nazi corrective) respective electrolytic ions. You must introduce a control by the addition of a sacrificial anode affixed to the alloy wheel perpendicular to the corrosive elements. I suggest you braze a length of Table-Y copper tubing adjacent to the valve cap, approximately 150mm in length and untreated. A simple earth-conductor may also be introduced to accelerate the process - this will require you to fit a ground-earth spike (made from 100% brass) and ground each wheel every time you park you vehicle - you could perhaps introduce a quick-release (non corrosive) electrical connector to help speed things up if you're in a hurry.........

.......either that or buy some bloody plastic ones
