Need codes read - 2.1TD power loss

Post by sixspeed »

Hi All

Our 2.1TD is intermittantly losing power, only a few seconds at a time accompnaied by the engine waring light, then all back to normal again. I'm guessing I need to get the codes read first but don't fancy bending over for the lcaol dealer - are there any other options? If anyone is near to Aldershot and has got any dignostic kit I'd be happy to give you a few beer tokens for your time.

on XUD engines the EML comes on when the fuel filter is getting blocked

whens the last time it was changed ?

Also, would appear as an intermittant fault? Car seems to drive fine the other 99% of the time.

yes mate its very very easy to change ...

it definately sounds like the fuel filter to me if it hasnt been changed for severel years

they cost about £5-£10 . its certainly worth trying that if you dont wanna bend over for the dealers code reading prices

give me a few moments to find a picture of a 2.1 and i'll post it with instructions were it is...

ok heres a picture. the big orange circle indicates the fuel filter housing . the fuel filter is inside this

you need to remove the 4 torx bolts (marked orange circle's-the small ones)

make sure you clean the lid properly with toilet tissue and dry it so when you put the new filter in its nice clean and dry

ye if the fuel filter is blocked and fuel is not getting through proper it would cause power loss...

im not saying this is your problem but i would certainly do the fuel filter since you said several years since last change

make sure you remove the bolts carfully. the new filter will have a rubber seal around the top, keep it nice and clean

and make sure you clean the top of the fuel filter housing BEFORE you put new filter in....

so that when you place the new filter in all the housing and seal is nice and clean. this will also ensure you get an air tight seal .

as gary says but DO NOT USE TOILET TISSUE TO CLEAN this will fall apart and if it gets into your fuel system you will have a tons of proplems.
when you replace filter fill the housing up with a diesel cleaner then pump the diesel primer [the rubber bulb seen on the left hand side of garys pic] till it goes hard, then you good to go.

ive used toilet paper to clean it many times

ok use a tea towel then ...

i only dry the housing lid on the inside . i dont actually clean inside the housing ... sorry should have made that more clear

only clean the housing lid you remove the 4 torx bolts out .... on the inside were the rubber seal meets it...

If the fuel filter doesn't sort it - try the in-tank strainer next.

and as nigel said, once the new filter is fitted and you have bolted the lid back on with the 4 torx bolts you have to prime the fuel system

this pic below shows were this is for you, circled RED in the top left corner (as nigel says)

just firmly keep pressing this untill it goes hard. you will hear the filter housing filling back up with diesel ..
