2.2 16v sri snapped timing belt!
Hi all new to the forum although not to 406's, last one being a D9 v6 which i loved!
I have recently bought a 2.2 sri, petrol version with a snapped timing belt, don't have any knowledge on these engines apart from they don't seem too common, been trying to source parts to fix it!
Not stripped to inspect yet, are these engines prone to doing lots of damage with timing belt failiure?
Any advice welcome!

Re: 2.2 16v sri snapped timing belt!
Depends on how fast the Engine was going,
if it snapped on tick over -you might get away with it,
The only way to find out is too put a new belt on or take the c/h off,
good luck mate

There's a secondary timing chain in the head driving the other camshaft. It's chain-driven up there but this may need some attention. I suppose without whipping the head off for a look you'd have to time it up and rotate the crank by hand to see what goes on? then a compression test etc....

This engine's a close relative of the 2.2 HDi - one of the guys on the coupe forum had a belt snap on the motorway recently, he 'got away with' a couple of bent valves and some broken cam followers. You may be lucky & your valves are OK.
I'd try removing the cam covers, check the followers etc and onec you're sure there's nothing in the valve train preventing it, try turning it over by hand. You'll soon know if the valves and pistons are on more than nodding terms......
May not be relevant, but 2.2's have balancer shafts in the sump, gear driven from the crankshaft......
Good luck.
* makes mental not to get yon lacky band changed pronto *

Nah, the cams are right over the valves on that one, there is no rocker to absorb the blow. It's at least got bent valves.

Oh!
I see what you mean.
Isn't there supposed to be something that 'gives' on the camshaft drive / sprockets to limit damage?

Thanks all for your advice, car is getting dropped off today so hopefully get some time to start work on it this week.
Think easiest route may be to find a replacement head if i can find one! Don't seem to be too many of these engies about!

Re: 2.2 16v sri snapped timing belt!
Hi all, quick update, made a start stripping the engine and found that its been run low on oil and the inlet camshaft had seized hence the snapped belt! unfortunately its wrecked the camshaft and the head where it sits. so now left with the choice of finding another head and hope bottom of engine ok or look out for a complete engine. not proving easy to find either. if i don't have any luck i'll probably break the car which is a shame as its only done 66 thou.

i would think its better to change the engine, otherwise u may need to do a load of work to the bottom end mabie not stright away but i would think it wont last that long if its been low on oil

Had the valves the piston tops come together?
Can you take some pics as the engine isn't exavtly common and any info would be great.

Looks pretty similar to the 2.0 in the pickies. In fact I wonder if the head would fit... (probably not, it'd probably confuse the hell out of the ecu)

It does look very similar to the 2 litre but are a few differences, seems to be an oil feed thats not on 2 litre and 2.2 has variable valve timing and not sure whether 2 litre has. Four bent valves so would have been easy fix if head not ruined! Its dawning on me 2.2 not so common, still no luck with a spare engine!

Re: 2.2 16v sri snapped timing belt!
There is some sort of gubbins on the end of the inlet cam. Coupled with different almost everything including bolts I'd have thought it would be more trouble than it's worth.
I'm not sure how much this will help you but it's all the vehicles with the 2.2 engine, searched by the head and camshaft part numbers:
2 document(s) found for 407
1 document(s) found for 406 new
1 document(s) found for 807
1 document(s) found for 607
1 document(s) found for 607 new
1 document(s) found for C8
I don't think they fitted these to anything else, unlike the diesels
