NEED HELP WITH MY FUEL FILTER RENEWAL

I HAVE A D9 2.L HDI
TRYING TO PUT ANOTHER FUEL FILTER IN.HERE GOES--
DISCONNECTED EVERYTHING & GOT IT DRAINED,BUT WHEN I TRY TO TAKE THE TOP OFF THE HOUSING THE WHOLE TOP THING MOVES.IS THIS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN?I MEAN,THE TOP IS PLASTIC BUT THERE'S A METAL PART JOINED TO IT.ARE THEY BOTH SUPPOSED TO COME OFF TOGETHER(IN A ONER)?

If it's this type....http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.ph ... u=12067113 the top screws off completely.(Thanks to Steve Earwig).

The other type has a nut on the lid, unscrew the nut/lid 90 degrees and lift off the lid. there is a metal ring inside this type, take note how it fits, also take note which way up the filter goes.

I've no experience of this myself, but this post may help.
