GEAR BOX QUERY-HOW MUCH?WHERE?WORTH IT?
just wanted to know you lots oppinion
I'm thinkin of getting another gearbox for my 406HDi (90) rapier 2001
Can you guys tell me roughly the approximate price for a 2nd hand gear box from a dismantler/scrappy?(ball-park figure)
Also, how much should a mechanic take to put it in my car?(bearing in mind the prices up here in scotland are pretty reasonable!)
Lastly, can it be any 90hp 406 gearbox?or does it have to be a rapier gearbox?does it have to be before/after a certain year for it to fit?
thanks guys-appreciate the help

Re: GEAR BOX QUERY-HOW MUCH?WHERE?WORTH IT?
well for a start if your replacing the gearbox it would be silly not to do the clutch while its off
for a good working gearbox i would say between £80-£175
cost of fitting around £80-£100
its not rapier gearbox - rapier is simply the spec of the car's trim level .. ie interior . wheels. added extras etc etc
as long as the new gearbox came from a hdi 90 406 it will work on your car...
question . whats up with your gearbox ?

Might be worth checking for any excess play in the gear change linkages as well.

If you do get around to changing the box oil, chuck some molyslip in there too, should help quite a bit.

Re: GEAR BOX QUERY-HOW MUCH?WHERE?WORTH IT?
IMPORTANT - do not overfill the gearbox oil. make sure it is fully empty before you put new in.
my mechanics helper decided not to empty my gearbox oil fully when i had a new clutch fitted.
so when we put 2 litres in it was actually 2.5 litres in there. which burst the shaft seals and oil was leaking
then he spent 7 hours, 3 days later changing 2 little seals he was well pissed off cos he was doing it for free

If they do it by the book,i.e drop the subframe,I think you can double that fitting estimate and then some.

Re: GEAR BOX QUERY-HOW MUCH?WHERE?WORTH IT?
If I remember correctly, only the 110 is a bit of a pain, the 90 is alright when removing the box. I remember doing a clutch on a Mondeo, subframe had to come off which wasn't the easiest of jobs when the car's only a foot off the ground, plus it has to go back on in exactly the same position or it throws the geometry out. man I really loved that weekend

Re: GEAR BOX QUERY-HOW MUCH?WHERE?WORTH IT?
Lucky sods. The V6 needs the subframe off to get at the gearbox, and everything's a royal pain down there thanks to the exhaust manifolds. On my car (no seized nuts/bolts any more!) I could probably do a clutch change in about 8 hours using air tools, a 2-post lift and a month's supply of co-codamol because I know the job far too well. I'd put garage time at about 12 hours for an experienced mechanic unfamiliar with the car, and longer for a car that needs "freeing up" (mine needed the chassis cutting open first time round to weld up a cage nut for the subframe, and every single nut+bolt put up a fight)
