EML on - Won't start

Post by Catflem »

Its all take take take from me at the moment as far as the forum is concerned  - but your sage like advice would be appeciated to solve another how long is a piece of string question regarding a non starting 2002 hdi (90).

I changed the fuel filter, inevitably there was some diesel spilt, but she started up afterwards. When backing it out of the garden the engine stalled, and the EML came on. I've almost flattened the battery trying to start it. I've disconnected the plug on top of the diesel filter, and the one that sits on the bunch of cables just below the filter housing and zapped some wd40 into them to clear out any diesel that may be causing the problem. I have also pulled the wires from the ECU, and pushed them back in again, but still no joy.

The battery is now on charge, and its getting dark, so it'll be tomorrow morning before I can wiggle any wires about.........but, where do I start ?

Depends on which version you have? (Earlier HDi 90's have a Bosch fuel system with an in-tank lift pump, newer ones have a Siemens system with no lift pump, but a rubber priming bulb, located towards the back, driver's side under the bonnet).

If you have the Siemens, squeeze the bulb to prime the system & try again.

If you have the Bosch, try to prime as follows: Pump runs for about 4-5 seconds each time you turn on the ignition, therefore try doing this a good few times to fill the filter, before trying to start.

In either case, an incorrectly seated quick release coupling could stop it working.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like I've got the siemens system, as there is a priming bulb a few inches away from the housing.

I've just primed it, the pressure built up, then diesel started leaking through the clamping ring on top of the filter housing...... so hopefully its just a simple case of a newbie screwing up something as basic as a fuel filter change

I'll let the battery charge up over night, then take the housing lid off and refit it tomorrow morning to see if that solves the problem.

It would have been spraying everywhere if it was the Bosch  Obviously, with no lift pump, the fuel pump has to suck the fuel from the tank, air bubbles won't help but you've got no chance if the filter housing's leaking.

:cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Wot a happy chappy I am today.

You guys were spot on.......... it was a case of a numpty buggering about when he doesn't know his arse from his elbow when it comes to diesels

I followed Gary 406's advice on another posting about fuel filters - I took the whole lot back out, purchased another new filter, and cleaned and dried the entire housing.

It was a swine to get the system bled though. The pipes were clear of bubbles, so I tried starting it....... bubbles would then re-appear, so I pressed the primer bulb 50 times, no sign of bubbles, tried to start it again, it still wouldn't start, and bubbles re-appeared yet again, I went through this procedure about 5 times until it finally burst into life :D .

I'd give you guys the thumds up, but it aches like mad from all that priming

Good news! 8)

notes to self:
1. may be possible to distinguish Siemens equipped HDi 90 / XUD drivers due to greater muscular development.
2. equally, may be possible to distinguish Bosch / HDi drivers by lack of muscles and money due to lift pump replacement.
3. do not antagonise former category, as they may rip your arm off / clout you with the soggy end.
