it only cost me £40 to have the lower engine mount changed

basicly its a cv boot sliced in half you cut your old one off put a glue on the seem of the split boot put it in place clip it togheter and hold it till glue sets, grease in then -cable ties on job jobbed,

The split cv boot is a good idea in principle. About 2yrs ago when the last o/s/f cv boot split (when the spring snapped and went through it) i got a bailcast split cv boot from the local car shop with same idea of not having to take the driveshaft out. Gave the instructions a good read on how to fit it and the inboard end of the boot was to small to go round the driveshaft even if you trimmed it up to the suggested place in the instructions. I gave up with the idea and a friend of mine just fitted one that i bought from GSF. He had the right tools to do the job unfortunately he doesn't live round here anymore.......

Interesting reading this topic.As i posted the other week,my lower rear mount had gone,badly.My local breakers had a good mount on a hdi,nut after an hour,i still could`nt get the driveshaft out of the gearbox.I was going to get the mount & housing/bracket & drop it into our plant workshop with the new mount & get them to assemble it.
So i got the new mount,£11 from ecp,dissmantled everything under the car & cut through the old metal mount ring with my hacksaw blade mounted upside down as mentioned on here.But after an hour or so trying to get the new mount in the housing with some threaded bar to pull the mount in the housing,i gave up
So i got some 10mm thick reinforced crusher conveyor belt from work,cut out 5 circles with my drill hole saw,& fitted them into the housing & bolted it all back together.
Well,i think it must be one of my best bodges
The difference is amazing.It fells & drives like a new car.Now more banging & jerking,no more slipping the clutch to make smooth gear changes,& no more terrible torque steer.If it lasts a few months i`ll be happy.I have done over a 1000 miles since i done it.

Thats how the old mount came out.The rubber part was`nt attatched to the metal outer ring.

If you get an angle grinder or grinding machine to the outside of the new mount and grind a little bit off all the way round it will fit in the casing a little bit easier, also clean up the inside of the casing and grease it a little.

I did grease up the inside of the housing,but no luck.I also did think about taking a bit off the new mount.To me,the new mount looks oval,but after measuring it it was 40 thou out,which is nothing apparently.
To be honest,i think i will just leave it for now,as the "bodge" has worked a treat.

Well, really the best way to fit these mounts is to take the whole mount off and have the new one pressed in.

Heres another idea saw this one on another forum somewhere and the bloke on there reckoned he got the mount out using the hacksaw to saw/weaken the bottom of the mount and split it with a hammer and chisel which is pretty much the same as whats been said here already. The main difference is he said the new mount was in the freezer for a while! Then he offered up the new bush & whacked the new mount in with a hammer and piece of wood.
I guess the mount contracts after being in the freezer and it should be slightly smaller then when you whack it into the casting and then it will expand again. I reckon this could work. I'll have to give it a go when my bodge gives up.

My mate showed me a tool he bought for replacing Ford Focus suspension bushes....it just might be useful for replacing the lower engine mount without removing the driveshaft.
It has a large screw and a handle to wind in a metal block that pushes out the old bush and a big metal block to be able to wind in the new bush.
Anyway, the one I'm doing on monday will probably be done in a press.

Hi all, after reading the Pros and cons of replacing the lower engine mount bush. I decided to take the car to my local Peugeot independant who did the job for me yesterday. I can't believe the difference it's made to the car! Money very well spent !! Kev

The latest one I replaced by cutting a slot in the old bush and knocking out the bush casing.
I pressed the new one in using a vice.... with the mounting block off the car of course, went in very easy.

speaking of mounts. jasper. my judder is not half as bad now
i still think the top mount needs replacing.
might get both done. when guy did my clutch last year he jacked engine up really high. and did not undo the mounts.
so the stress on them would have been hugh.
not to mention the 8 hours a few days after changing shaft oil seals. cos he f*cked up.
so im thinking all that stress jacking engine up has done it. need to get the other 2 changed.
i still think the top mount needs replacing.

Speaking of clutches....I was persuaded to replace the clutch on a Nissan Micra this morning....took me 90 minutes from start to finish....on the floor with the car on axle stands and without using power tools.
