02 plate HDI 90 whats missing in the engine???

Post by Ga73 »

Hi,
Just bought an 02 plate HDI 90 glx which was bought known faulty with the description "sluggish at low rpm" which i thought maybe a faulty maf sensor so for £450 for the car i took a chance as used to have a LPG 406 and really like them.

I cleaned the maf with electrical contact cleaner which to be honest didnt make a huge difference, then i noticed a hose not connected going from the egr to a sensor so connected that back and got a little better although still seems 'hesitatant' but i have nothing to compare against as wasnt running properly when i bought it. Its also showing up intermitently 'anti pollution fault' on the display which i guess is common and a brief engine check light on the speedo when this happens.

Other strange thing is, it seems when warm and stationary the idle will go from 800-900 rpm to 1800 rpm.

FINALLY ive noticed looking in the engine bay below the air filter box theres a multi plug hanging down not connected to anything and what looks like a mounting bracket on the inner wing (more or less below the airbox) is something missing here ?? and is this the reason for the hesitant running ??

Fuel computer is averaging 32-34 mpg which doesnt seem to great..

Any help or guidelines what to look for VERY much appreciated, ive ordered peugeot planet reader but wont be with me til next week so got this weekend to tinker.

Cheers all

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

We've not seen any 2.0 110 with a fap yet. The antipollution fault is a bit generic, it appears when there's any kind of fault on the engine management.

Could be the throttle position sensor or even low fuel pressure, you'd really need to get a good quality code read like a 'global test' at a dealer (although pricey now I'd imagine).

As far as I remember the MAF on the 90 has no other function other than to check on EGR operation :| :?

Thanks all,
Ordered a Peugeot planet reader from ebay which I believe can do global testing.

Still puzzled what's missing that the multi plug should connect to near air box though

Not sure which plug it is, but some of these plugs are "extras" that are in the wiring loom for different models with different equipment spec.

Hi there,

No it looks like it has been in use at some point, the hanging down underneath the air filter box, a multiplug like the others on the car.

Its too dark now but ill take a picture tomorrow to see if anyone can work it out and put it out of my misery... :)

cheers fellas

ps Changed the fuel filter at and the bottom saw tiny pieces of metal ... does this mean my pumps knackered and if so which one will it be

If yours has a Bosch system, it will have an in-tank lift pump, (which you should hear running for about 4 seconds as you turn on the ignition).

If it's a Siemens system, it relies on HP pump suction, but also has a priming bulb in the line from tank to filter, (somewhere near the filter).

Lift pumps do fail, some reports talk of debris from them reaching the filter, others have found they die when the brushes wear out and don't contaminate the fuel system. (My 2 HDi's both reached over 150k on the original lift pump, so no personal experience so far touch wood!

The filter is before the HP pump in either case so it can't be coming from there. I would clean it out painstakingly fit a new filter & check again in a few thousand miles, if nothing else develops.

Your PP2000 will do all the tests including 'global' BTW. 8)

Thanks everyone, your all very very helpful and its much appreciated :)

With regard to the 'missing' part just been looking through old posts and found a pic dogslife posted...what is this as the multiplug looks like the one on my car that isnt connected and it seems to be in the right place

Cheers

Well, that's the MAP sensor. :?

Not ever having seen under the bonnet of a HDi 90, I wouldn't know if they normally have a connector for the MAP, (but hopefully someone with a '90' will confirm or otherwise)?

Since your car is complaining about a faulty MAP & we think it shouldn't have one, I'm wondering if maybe your car has been fitted with an ecu etc. from a 110? (I've only connected PP2000 to one HDi 110 & can't remember if it tells you what engine code the ecu's from).
