2.I td , very slow, no real pull at all threw the gears.

Post by StefanYHU »

Hey chaps,
Mot time came and had to spend quite a few quid to get it through. :(

The car does not seem to pull well through the gears, when you floor it in 2nd, thrid or 4th there is no real power at all and all I can hear is the whistle from the turbo.....or could it be a boost leak?

Any tests I can do?

Are all 2.1td pugs very slow?

thanks

No, not slow (relatively speaking of course), at just over 3k it should be pulling like a train. Check for splits/damage in the pipework between the turbo, intercooler and inlet.

I must have a look as when you hit 3krpm it just feels dead, no pull whatsoever.

I was thinking airflow meter? Will give the pipes a check.

+1 for the pipes.

I had exactly the same symptoms on a Peugeot expert van a while back...intercooler pipe under the rad was split....whistle and no power.

At least check the pipes first.

All pipes seem to be intact.

I did a fuel filter and oil change but cant notice any difference.

How would you test to see if the turbo charger is gone?

Any other ideas?

cheers

Any ideas guys?

It takes forever to even hit 3k rpm in the lower gears, loads of sound and no power.

Its a 97 2.1 td, is it worth taking it to a garage to see what the craic is? Can they be plugged in.

Is there any diagnostic tool I can buy to see if I can find the problem.

thanks

They can be diagnosed, but not much will work with them, (AFAIK), apart from Pug's own Peugeot Planet 2000 / Lexia 3 interface.

Clones available from Ebay, among others, for about £110. (beware of £80-ish ads for S1279 modules - this isn't the whole system, it's just an add-on for newer cars).

There's getting to be a few members with this kit now - may be worth adding your location in case anyone nearby can help.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I had these similar symptoms but maybe not as noticeable as yours. It was diagnosed on an ECU reader - P0165 if I remember correctly - needle lift sensor dead. Replaced and it was as good as new.

Does sound like a split hose/pipe somewhere, 2.1TD's are quite quick, especially if chipped :supafrisk:
