ECU problem....

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

ECU problem....

Post by dsj1979 »

Hi,

First time post, long time watcher...

52 reg 406 glx estate 2.0 hdi 110. I'm in Herne Bay, Kent.

I bought a KWP2000 kit and tried to flash the ECU. This worked for a few maps but none of them were perfect... then unfortunately on the last map the computer crashed therefore buggering up the ECU. I can't write the old file onto the ECU (I'm guessing) as it can't read a valid file there to delete first. I bought another ECU and hoped that I could flash my old map onto it but it doesn't seem to be working....

I'm wondering what my options are. I could get a new ecu, bsi and transponder but would rather not. I'm guessing or hoping if I get a tuner to write a map onto it, they should hopefully have a more sophisticated system that wouldn't require a valid map on there before it can do this? Would that be correct? This way hopefully it'll be fixed plus I can get something out of it. The main purpose of this is I want to improve the 40mpg I get!

I was wondering what PP2000 does. Can I write the old file onto the ECU with this? Or maybe get the new ECU to work? Does it have these functions?

Any ideas or suggestions which what I've said or any other ideas?

By the way, I know it was my fault for messing about with it but I knew I was taking a gamble.... win some lose some!

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi Daniel, sorry to hear about your problem.

If your ecu is locked, I think you can only recover it by having it reprogrammed off the car by a specialist.

Fitting another ecu is possible, but it needs to be 'paired' with the BSI for it to enable and allow the car to start. I understand you can do this with PP2000, but I've never tried it. It almost certainly has to be a good hardware / firmware match for the original too, there seem to be lots of versions of 110 HDi ecu set-ups, which makes getting a compatible remap tricky - as I guess you already know...

Worth ringing round to see if someone local can sort your original ecu? (At least you'd know how much before you start).

I don't know of anyone in your part of the world with PP2000, (but maybe I'm wong).

It's difficult trying to work out the options. The ECU numbers on the new ECU seem to match my current one. I'd like cruise control so I'm considering getting pp2000 but if I can't use it to match to the BSI that will be more money wasted or an expensive cruise control. I already have a code reader for the peugeot so those benefits aren't quite so applicable.

I'm trying to find out from tuners whether a remap will work. That's about £200 but at least I do get the benefit of a mapped car, not just a working car. Though getting it unlocked like you suggest could be cheaper...... I'm guessing PP2000 can't do this?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi
If it were me id look on fleabay or go to scrappy and find a donor car which has engine ecu,bsi and key/keys as the key's imobiliser chip will/should be paired to the ecu/bsi.this chip can be put into your existing key so no need to go lock changing.
im not an expert here so this is just novice advise...i have done it to my preplexed 110 hdi (and got cruise working from it!!!)
ive also done another 2002 406 hdi90 which i bought with a fried ecu and did it.
if you want cruise maybe get the above bits from a cruise equiped car - get the cruise stalk aswell!
points to note:
make sure the engine ecu & bsi is same make as your cars....ie bosch or siemens - i think all bsi's are siemens?? someone will correct me here if im wrong?
also try and get bits from the same body style as your own...as i found out..a saloon setup wont have the rear window washer/wiper bit!
pp2000 may be able to switch that type of thing to on if its from a saloon and you have an estate..i never had pp2000 then..
you may/maynot need pp2000 to fine tune options after but it should get you running again.
you will prob need the donor speedo cluster aswell and the mileage showing should be that of the donor vehicles
if you dont get the cluster i think it will add the donor' cars mileage to your current mileage :( search for this on the forums to get more accurate info on mileage's with bsi/cluster changes.while searching also look up the correct bsi wake up procedure as you may want to do this to the 'new'bsi)
as above im no expert , so do the above at your own risk!! it should be just plug n play stuff..was for me anyway
good luck

No, I don't think so. But it can enable cruise, match the ecu to the BSI, (I think) and give you much better diagnostics than most 'readers'.

Unfortunately it can't flash program the ecu.

Try http://www.ilexa.co.uk/ or http://www.chiptuners.org/ for more info.
