Diesel fumes

Post by moodybluetwo »

I’m looking for advice on a problem on my 2000 2.0l HDi. I have had the car for 2 ½ years and its covered 73000 miles from new…I have added 20000 of that. The problem only occurs at high speed/revs…in excess of 80 mph which I only do very rarely. After I have slowed down I can smell diesel fumes and when stopped I can smell it when I open the bonnet but there does not appear to be any leaks. There are no other symptoms and the car runs fine all the time. Does the fuel pressure at the injectors increase with high speed? If so maybe there could be a fine mist spraying somewhere.

Worth inspecting the leak-off pipes - a series of short hoses that connect between the injectors, then to a union near the fuel filter.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

the exhaust can rust easy, ive seen it on my own and other hdi exhausts a wee bit of rust is all it takes for a leak.
If you can smell the fumes inside the car sort it out quick or else you will have carbon monoxide inside the car.

My apologies i am wrong, it does produce some monoxide when under load but idling it produces next to none due to complete combustion, its lack of complete combustion that produces the CO.
