I believe all post 2004, Euro 4 compliant diesels have to have a FAP, (though not all makes use a fuel-borne catalyst, like Pugs).

This is why GM stopped making diesels & bought in the Fiat JTD, aka 1.7 / 1.9 CDTI, (like Ford & the TDCI, they pretend it's a 'joint venture' development).

Not so weird when you consider the biggest improvement they ever made was to stop making Poxhalls altogether in 1975, since then it's all been rebadged Opels.

Nearest they ever came to making a decent diesel was the lump that became the engine for the Ascona/Manta 400 - even then they had to get Cosworth to help.....

As far as I know the 1.7 CDti is an Isuzu unit and very reliable, but the 1.9 and 2.0 CDti is vauxhalls effort and not so good.

There's a 1.3 CDti, which I think is Fiat's, and is really crap apparently :|

The 1.7 CDti Euro 4 Ashtray van I'm using at the moment is doing 58mpg  and scoots along surprisingly sprightly :o

Must get that old Volvo out for a spin at the weekend, haven't driven it for 4 weeks :(

Was the 3.0 diesel in the Vectra an Isuzu unit?

How was it for reliability? These things are usually in heavy duty trucks!

Vauxhall seem to love wriggling out of warranty claims. I remember going to a Vauxhall dealer with a Vectra driver who was picking up a boot protector. Beside us was an irate taxi driver who was arguing and swearing with the service guy that the item (not sure exactly what) should be covered in warranty, and the service guy giving the usual excuses about mileage, wear and tear etc.
Parts guy said it was a common occurence....

Truth be told I nearly bought an Omega once. It was the one with the BMW (haaaaccckkk-phut) 2.5 diesel engine. Unfortunately it was rustier than even my later D9, on a par with the old Ford Orion, so I passed.

Lots of dead ones in Slaab 9-5's apparently, (researched these before buying the Pug).
Goes something like this:
They use a bit of oil.....
The dipstick tube's very narrow, so when you top up it takes ages to register.....
Get overfilled occasionally....
Excess lubricant gets ingested - terminal runaway.

One 80,000 miler I looked at was bedding in engine No. 3.

the old 1.7td vauxhall put in the vectra was a reliable and economical unit it was reliable because it was an isuzu unit and economical because it produced a microscopic amount of power and a a bit of clatter.
I wouldnt want a vauxhall because there is something very dry about them, i cant put my finger on it, a subjective dislike of their stuff really. But also because ford with the exception of the scorpio always has a better alternative.

The only diesel vauxhall i ever came across that was any good was a cavalier with the 1.7 Izuzu engine. Seemed quite reliable and reasonable power. No where near as good as a 406 though.

or more importantly not as good as the xud.

although in fairness my aunt has a 1999 zafira 2.0 dti worst car in the world after the corsa, it got to 170k miles on the first engine with no oil changes.

My old XUD ZX I had for 3 years was a cracking wee car. All it needed for were glow plugs.

A warranty that could last a lifetime?

I nearly got a 1.7 Isuzu Cavalier instead of my first 406.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
