Any electricians

Post by plod »

I've just had a guy in to price up for fitting my new bathroom

Says I need to source a 45A circuit breaker - my fuse box is a Memera 21 - current fuses have M6 type 1 and 161 QEB on them
From quick search online, seems these aren't the used thing anymore

Anyone know places that do old style circuit breakers?

OR

Would I be better off with a new fuse box????????

I don't do domestic stuff, (unless you count my own), so I'm not so au fait with what you can get old MCB-wise, but my instinct is to recommend a new consumer unit. Modern ones are much safer, having to RCD's to protect different groups of circuits, so you don't loose the lot if something trips. Gives you much better protection for the important bits - you & your family.

With special offers I got two 'fully populated' ones for £50 - £75 each. You need to factor in installation cost though, get youself a few prices before making up your mind. (There seems to be plenty of us to sound out if you're in any doubt).

The fitter said he'd have to do some work on the electrics anyway as the shower wasn't wired in correctly in the first place
He is a plumber but does do other stuff
He is ringing me back to let me know whether he can start a week tomorrow
I thinking then to ask him to wire in a new fuse box as well?

May as well have it right

Just make sure he's Part 'P' qualified and can certify the electrical installation on completion.

I'd defo recommend getting more than one price.

I have one concern

There is 2 fuse boxes in the hall cupboard
a 6 part one and a 4 part one
The first seems to run the sockets, lights, cooker, etc
The second is for the storage heaters
I ripped out all the storage heaters as wasn't impressed with them
So that 4 part box is free
However it was all on economy 7 and only ran midnight to 7am
He wants to put the shower into this fuse box

I might be over complicating matters, and it's just a matter of changing the incoming supply over to a normal feed
