Try adjusting the switches, clutch first ,make sure clutch switch button is 'in' when pedal is up

When you set the cruise control in the first place you need to lift the control stalk and hold for 2 - 3 seconds - it's not just a short stab. Have you done that ?

yes i have held the stalk for a good 10 seconds but no joy
