Which oil?

Post by greebo »

Hi all, just done a quick search but can't find anything conclusive. My 406 2litre HDi is getting ready for an oil and filter change. Which oil do you use/recommend? Thanks in advance, Kev

Hi

I use a good quality 10w40 semi-synthetic oil. I think its been covered on here before but don't use fully synthetic unless its been used since the 406 was new. Remember reading somewhere it can cause problems with the seals in the engine if the oil has been switched from fully synth to part synth or vice versa. I tend to stick to the same brand of oil as well kinda makes sense. I do an oil change every 6k as i do about 300-400 miles a week so it comes round pretty quick. Total is the brand peugeot and recommend use i think you can get some special offers on it sometimes. I pay £23.00 for texaco halvoline and its not bad. Prices for engine oil have gone up a fair bit in the last year. You get what you pay for though i tried some Fuchs 10w40 a while ago from GSF and it made the engine sound like a bag of nails so i drained it off and put the normal stuff in. Any good brand will do. Asda's do their own brand 10w40 quite cheap but i've never used it. Maybe someone else on here can tell us if its any good . Hope that helps.

well ive put fully synth in for he last 60k miles without problems, however semi synth is cheaper. i also do 3-400 miles a week.

would I be ok going back to semi synth and shortening my service interval or should i stay where i am ?

i dont mine either way I service her about every 10'000 miles and hae 4 cans of motul in the garage that i use for both this car and the seat alhambra we have.

but once thats gone if semi synth is preferable ill go to that ?

Hi, thanks for your replies. I too have heard you can have problems switching from Fully Synth to Semi Synth. Looking through the old service bills i got with the car it looks like it's been on Semi Synth for a while, so i'll be sticking to that. Kev

Total Quartz 7000 10w40 every time for this engine.

Cheap enough from Peugeot, and if you live in town go to the Robins and Day off London Road

Well, just got back from Robins & Day (as leehdi suggested) with 5litres of Total quartz 7000, an oil filter and sump plug washer. All for £33.55, not for a Dealer i thought. Just need the rain to go away now. Kev
