Good idea, especially if it's the one that says "Lucas" on it :P

That's mad money anyway, there's loads more Epidemic ecus on ebay for much less than that.

605s had Bosch VE too, apparently.

See if I was to do a 2.1/bosch transplant I think I'd start with a 1.9TD in the first place.
Then you will have no ECU, immob etc troubles and you won't even have to run a throttle cable.
Although the 2.1 does have a hydraulic clutch, probably better off fitting a 306 HDi gearbox.

Wouldn't that give you the 'shorter' ratios, same as a 1.9? (My Xsara HDi 90 was about 28.5 mph/1000).

Suspect a gutsy, tuned 2.1 could reduce a BE series 'box to it's component parts fairly quickly

2.0HDi 306 has the same ratios as the 2.1. I.e. 2500rpm at 70mph in 5th instead of 3000rpm for the 1.9.
Therefore 2.0HDi 306 gearbox means I can keep the far simpler cable clutch and have the ratios aswell :)

Just a quick update for you guys, a pre-97 ECU DOES cure the tacho, although leaves the check engine light on.

I got it from eBay for the princely sum of £24!

For reference, these ECUs DO NOT WORK (my old one):

And this one DOES:
Image

From what I understand, the significance is the A at the end of the part number (the B ones don't work). Also, Citroen XM ones seem to have the exact same part number as the one I got from a pre 97 2.1 Pug :)

I was worried at first in case the blipper was tied to the ECU etc, but nope, everything just worked! :cheesy:

PS: Yes Kris, I'd like to get it all tuned up soon so I'll drop you a text shortly :)

My 1.9TD went like stink on a 22psi tune, adavcned the pump, fettle with the boost compensator and run it on veg oil.
I imagine a 2.1 running even 18psi will be pretty quick!

This will soon be an MOT failure, apparently :( You'll want to figure out why this is and sort it out (or remove the EML bulb immediately before your MOT)

Bulb's already taken out, there's no way around it. It's on because the engine is running without a pump according to the ECU!

I'm more concerned right now about the metered smoke test! Going to set the governor to about 4200 rpm before my MOT and get it fully tuned up too!

I reckon you should find a way of fooling the engine into believing there is a pump there - that way, if another condition occurs that would ordinarily trigger the EML, then you won't know about it. Maybe there is a component of the original Lucas EPIC pump that you could remove from the pump and adapt to the Bosch pump?

Disclaimer - I have no actual knowledge or experience of either of these pumps or the way they work/interact with the ECU

In an ideal world this is what I'd do, but the plug for the EPIC pump had quite a lot of pins on it, plus I left it with KrisB!

I was hoping to try and figure out how to do it, but if it involves checking sensors in the pump itself I can't think of an easy way to do it.

I guess the best way to do it would be to be get PP2000 and read what the error code actually is, there's probably a myriad of them though!

I wish I knew, I don't know enough about the 406 to know what is controlled by what. The fact that swapping the ECUs round fixed the tachometer suggests to me that it does more than simply control the pump, but it's a question of how much it controls!

Yes, I am missing something. (Like you've successfully swapped ecu's).

In which case PP2000 should be able to help, (but maybe only if the wiring from ecu to diagnostic port is the same as on the donor vehicle). Worth a try.
