I've got a new(ish) car!

Post by teamster1975 »

Afternoon gents! :)
I've not been around much recently due to trials and tribulations at home, my wife is recovering from a hysterectomy and other gynae stuff which has been ongoing for a few weeks. She's on the mend now but it's been a long tough road for her.
Anyway; back on topic!
I now own a 2002 Volvo V40 SE; it's the petrol 1.8 GDi engine, same ilk as Dai's HPi I would imagine.
I'm very impressed with the economy (although the tubby is not a great car to compare to! )
As a father of 3 the biggest difference to us is having BOOT SPACE!!!
I'll get some photos up when I get around to taking some!
1996 406 1.8LX Got a bad case of hydro lock!
1996 406 Executive 2.0 Turbo XU10J2TE No longer hangin' on in there :(
1997 Honda CB500V
2003 Volvo V40 1.8 GDi SE killed by a nutter in a beemer 5 series
2008 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium X

Howdy stranger :cheesy:

Glad to hear your wife's on the mend.

What is this, Ovlov corner? What happened to the tubby, chopped in for peanuts or chopped up for scrap?

If it's got the GDi engine (Mitsubishi) make sure you give it a good blast at least once a week & either use good quality fuel or a cleaning additive regularly. I had the 2.4 in the Space Wagon & it was coked right up.

The Volvo S40/V40 still looks good, especially the post-facelift models with darker headlights.

Volvos in general tend to age well.

All the best to you all, hopefully all the bad stuff is behind you all.

Waue is absolutely right, make sure you use an additive in your fuel at least every 3 months, the manifolds are known to block up, I've seen them with just a 12mm hole left in the manifold because of coking up.

Throttle bodies can be troublesome, but if you give them a regular blast and a good additive every 3 months you should be fine.

My son is a Volvo mechanic, so if you need any info just ask. :D

Ah the trust V40 - same platform as the Carisma! Sounded like a good purchase. They make brilliant, reliable and safe family hacks.

So does this mean that we are renaming the site to "406ocandvolvoowners.co.uk"...?

Thanks everyone, I had a good laugh at that lot!
It is the Mitsubishi GDi engine, direct injection petrol. Thanks for the tips jasper & Waue, I've been doing a bit of research and found lots of info on decoking, blasting the manifold with walnut shells & degunging! It's fairly low mileage at 58K but I'll be keeping a very close eye. Cambelt due at 60K so I've got to sus that one out.
It's a lovely car to drive, I was surprised how torquey the 1.8GDi is, it pulls very well!
