Mercedes W124
I love them old cars, i had one for a while that i tried to put on the road, they are superb cars, the best mercedes made and the proper definition of a german car.
what diesel are you getting the 2.5, 2.5 turbo, 3.0 or 3.0 turbo? i think there is not normally the option for a N/A 2.5 but mine had one transplanted into it from a 190e.

Tell me about it I lost a lot of money on an apparently reliable 2005 Japanese Honda Accord with a 2.2 diesel engine. Don't get me wrong, it's a WONDERFUL engine... when it works. So smooth and powerful. The car is quite comfy to sit in and look at as well.
But after a cracked exhaust manifold (warranty), clutch at 90k (warranty), master clutch cylinder (£200 - never fixed) and a blown turbo (£2000!), I decided to write it off in favour of the far more reliable 406 HDI. Never looked back.
I don't know what the current Accords are like reliability wise - I'd like to own one but not live in fear of it costing me a part of my limb in repairs...
sales rep at work has an accord.(on lease hire) its less than 2 years old. went bang with ALOT of smoke, wouldn't switch off ended up stalling it to make the engine stop. went to honda garage 3 times before they finally diagnosed the problem: it was leaking diesel back into the oil sump!! no i couldn't work it out either
1999 d8 1.8 petrol - died at 85163
51 plate hdi 110
i know 3 people with accords , one woman notices that it uses a bit more oil than shes used to, the other is my uncle who hates how the engine bay is so tight and he has to take it to the garage to get everything done, £600 for a new key barrel about a month ago. But then there is another person a neighbour she has an petrol executive one which seems to be going without so much as a problem.
But i think if your going to get a honda a vtec engine is still the better choice.
Merc W124 are built like tanks, last of the good Mercs before the beancounters took over from the engineers.
Biggest problem with Mercs seems to be rust. I've seen a lot of rusty Mercs, even the frogeyed ones.

Agree with the statement on rust, the one I'm buying is actually not too bad, it has a couple of scabs on one of the wings, I think the other wing has been replaced and painted with an old mop, but no rust.
no its not like the plastics you get on a vw, old merc plastics felt strong and not plasticky. The wood was even real.
My old estate had rust scabs around the wing corners, and up the side where it had been involved in a confrontation with a yaris (just a big scratch where the yaris was wrote off), but the rust wasnt beyond repair and it wasnt hiding underneath or in structural areas.
Here was the old ship:
that dent on the bootlid was what happened when my cousin shot the car with an air rifle it just left a dent
no rattles or squeaks out of this dash.

Funnily enough, when I first got my 406 and drove it up to my mothers, the dog ran in the drivers side like it thought it was getting a day trip
It wasn't so sure about the Honda initially truth be told...
